[Baren]: The mailing list / discussion forum for woodblock printmaking. Baren Digest Thursday, 16 April 1998 Volume 03 : Number 129 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Blueman Date: Wed, 15 Apr 1998 10:36:49 -0400 Subject: [Baren 639] Re: Baren Digest V3 #128 Baren: Dave, You must spend hours working on the encyclopedia. I just saw the two new additions (Japanese paper sizes) and the Directory. The Directory is a terrific idea. I like the thumbnail images, too. I hope you'll get all the information you need to fill in the blanks and that everyone who is listed will like it as much as I do. I printed out the information on Japanese paper sizes and added it to my folder that holds the stuff I want to study. I'm picking up many ideas from this site (recently the charcoal to make oilbased ink useable for continual printing) ***** Phil, I never thought of it as a "dog with his ass on fire" until you said it first, now every time I look, I start to giggle. Is St. John of God the same as St. John of the Cross? I like that he mutters to himself and is disheveled. On printmaking days who cares if they dress, right? I've been known to stay in my nightgown with the kitchen table spread with printmaking materials late into the afternoon. Then I look around and feel really depressed that I didn't tend to practical chores and maybe even forgot to eat. This doesn't happen all the time, just when the project is swallowing me up in its fire. Kinda like your "dog", Phil. ****** Emil, welcome. You didn't say what you do printwise. I'm sure all of us would like to hear about it! I can't imagine that any of us would be angry for your having visually linked our work to the site (you have been very careful to note copyright information). All for the greater good of the craft. I must say that it is amazing how quickly you get these changes instated. You put us all to shame... *** A hearty welcome to Emil. I think you'll find that Baren is a hell of a lot more lively than some of the other printmaking-related forums out there. Sometimes I think Ray could keep the whole thing moving by himself! With Hanga style woodblock printing, I don't understand the inking process. My question is, how do you keep the ink from going down into where you don't want it? With a roller it doesn't much happen. I'm thinking especially of the key block with its thin lines. How do you put ink onto thin lines, and how do you apply the paste? I read Dave's instructions, but without seeing it done, I can't imagine you'd get it where you want it without it all slopping down into the valleys. Brushes are soft and go wherever. Rollers just skim the surface. For those new to Baren, is a tape of Dave doing his stuff being interviewed in japanese tv. The tape originated with Matt, and has made several stops along the way. I think I got it from Phil and after the next stop it goes to Ray and then back to Japan. If anyone is interested I will be glad to add you to the mailing list. Reply promptly as I am getting ready to mail it out by Friday. Thanks. JULIO (ps. NO, the spanish translation will not be included!) ------------------------------ From: amoss@mindspring.com (John Amoss) Date: Wed, 15 Apr 1998 13:01:45 +0300 Subject: [Baren 643] tape queue Julio and others in line waiting for Dave's video- I would appreciate it if someone would send the tape down south to me. Once again, I don't mind being the one to send it back to Dave. Either way, my address is below: Thanks! - -john ------------------------------ From: Phil Bivins Date: Wed, 15 Apr 1998 17:59:52 -0400 Subject: [Baren 644] Re: Dave's video Julio, wanted to say it was not me that sent you the video. As a matter of fact, I haven't seen it yet. I was on the list, so I don't know what happened. Please send it my way before going on to Japan. Thanks, Phil ------------------------------ From: julio.rodriguez@walgreens.com Date: Thu, 16 Apr 1998 3:51:20 -0600 Subject: [Baren 645] Dave's video replayed.... My fault for the confusion. I got the tape from Gary in KS; It's going next to Phil in NC, then John Amoss in GA and then it ends with Ray in FL. It's a video of Dave doing a demo....but it is in Japanese. Anyone else interested on seeing the tape contact me or one of the others in the mailing list. Thanks. JULIO ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V3 #129 ***************************
