[Baren]: The mailing list / discussion forum for woodblock printmaking. Baren Digest Tuesday, 5 May 1998 Volume 03 : Number 146 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: David Bull Date: Tue, 05 May 1998 20:45:38 +0900 Subject: [Baren 706] An upcoming treat ... May I toss out a bit of a 'teaser' today? Nothing you can click on .... yet. I had a long visit here this afternoon from Choushi Horimoto, who is one of the two carvers at the Adachi Institute for Woodblock Prints here in Tokyo, studying/working there for over fifteen years now. Adachi's place is _the_ top place for traditional printmaking here in Japan; ever since the early part of this century they have been making both reproductions of old ukiyo-e and original modern prints. Working in an environment like that, Horimoto-san has learned a _lot_ about carving. Next to him, I know nothing yet. Anyway, one purpose of his visit here was to learn a bit about this internet stuff. He has been online for a short time now, browsing around the 'net, and has decided that he would like to put together a web site that describes and illustrates many of the things he has learned about this craft. He is concerned that the details are soon going to be lost, and wants to try and get as much of his knowledge as possible down for everybody to share. I think you can guess how I reacted to this ... "WHEN DO WE START?!!" But as I said, there's nothing you can click on yet. I think he will be making some contributions to the Encyclopedia soon though, and then after some learning and preparation, what should be a very interesting web site will be appearing. But what do you think - is it better if I don't mention things like this until they are ready... ? Anticipation ....
