[Baren]: The mailing list / discussion forum for woodblock printmaking. Baren Digest Thursday, 28 May 1998 Volume 03 : Number 166 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: sheryl@seas.gwu.edu (Sheryl Coppenger) Date: Wed, 27 May 1998 21:52:55 -0400 (EDT) Subject: [Baren 817] Introduction Greetings, My name is Sheryl Coppenger. I'm located in Washington, DC. I have a degree in Mathematics and have worked with computers for 20 years but have painted since I was 9 years old and have been taking nondegree art classes in painting and drawing off and on since the early 1980s. Currently I am finishing up a second BA in studio art with a concentration in printmaking. For the most part I do lithographs. I don't know yet if I will go to graduate school or just supplement what I know with working on my own and taking workshops. I've signed up for the Carol Wax mezzotint workshop at Frogman Press in South Dakota for later in the summer. If anyone knows good sources for woodblock or wood engraving workshops I would like information about them. So far I have only done one woodcut. It was on poplar wood, done for an introductory relief printing class. For the most part I do lithography and linoleum block prints. However, I do love Japanese block prints as well as wood engravings and I hope to delve deeper into woodblock printing later on. One of my best friends lives in Tokyo and has given me a couple of small books on the subject. I also have "Color Woodblock Printmaking" by Margaret M. Kanada and a couple of general books on relief printing. I am looking forward to lurking here and trying out things, maybe getting to the point where I can contribute down the road. I also discovered the pointer to PRINTS-L on www.woodblock.com and joined that list as well. My work web page includes some examples of my work. It's not really "professional", it's at my work site and just intended to be a place where my friends can check in and see what I've been up to. I began showing and selling my prints last year and hope to have a really good art-related web site up outside of my work place next month. This introduction already got a little longer than I'd planned, so I'll go back into lurk mode now. You will learn a lot here and we invite you to visit the encylopedia. I also suggest you go into the archives to look at specific subjects that might interest you. There is a wealth of great information in both. >If anyone knows good sources for woodblock or wood engraving >workshops I would like information about them. Not long at all. It is good to learn more about you. We all look forward to your contributions in the future. I am another of the "lurkers" who sit back in the second row to watch the goings on, and jump into the ring every now and then. I am not a printer or carver, just a woodblock print designer for now, but these folks pass some interesting information across here every once in a while, and of course what they lack in brevity is made up for with levity. We look forward to your questions and comments to further round out our own knowledge of the art. Gary Luedtke ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V3 #166 ***************************
