It would be of great interest to me (and my students) for you to describe how you systematically prepare for an upcoming show. College art graduates often lament the lack of such "nuts and bolts" real-world information in their studies. A great idea, Dave, who knows one of these days I may have a show of my own. Thanks Phil ------------------------------ From: jimandkatemundie@juno.com (James G Mundie) Date: Mon, 3 Aug 1998 19:35:52 -0400 Subject: [Baren 1290] the exchange update I have had many positive responses to my suggestion that we conduct a voluntary [Baren] exchange portfolio. Ten people have expressed interest so far: myself, Dave, Bill, Graham, Gayle, Richard, Roxanne, Sheryl, Jean, and Hideshi. I hope that more of you have just been waiting to see what has become of the idea before also casting in your support... On the whole, everyone seems to think this exchange is a great idea; the only reservations being about the size of the prints to be submitted and the deadline for completion. Those seem to be the next matters up for consideration. I will be making an off-list post to all those who have expressed interest which will contain all of the various opinions and suggestions I have so far received. Hopefully, we will be able to flesh out some of these issues. Anyone that has not yet spoken up is, of course, invited and encouraged to participate (please write to me or Dave off-list to be included). Another concern that I have mentioned to some of you is the need to set a deadline for people to have committed themselves to the exchange. I am hoping to set this deadline in the not too distant future, so that everyone will know far in advance exactly how many prints they will need to produce (which should be especially helpful to anyone that would like to make a reduction print). This should be a fun and rewarding experience for all of us. I look forward to the possibility that this might become an annual [Baren] tradition. More news to come... I would certainly like to add my encouragement to everybody to join this project. A thing like this should include as many [Baren] members as possible - both experienced printmakers and relative beginners. That is what [Baren] is about, sharing our experiences together. This should be a collection of work by peers - some more experienced than others perhaps, but peers nonetheless. In case there are any of you hesitant to join because you are not so confident of your printmaking skills, please put aside such fears; this portfolio will be a 'snapshot' of [Baren] 1998. > This should be a fun and rewarding experience for all of us. Ummmmmm... if we do all this off-list then how do the lurkers keep posted. They won't gain courage and or enthusiasm to come on stream. Consider Ray for instance.......how can I keep after him if we....well you get my point. This is a Baren thingie and as such should be debated and discussed on the baren. If there are lurkers out there that don't think this subject is relevant then let us not forget the expression "You can please some of the people some of the time, but you can't please all the people all the time. It would be their loss not to have some inherent interest in the procedure of such an exchange. My Canadian 1/2 =A2 worth. Jim, I will be responding to your posting ... Date: Mon, 3 Aug 1998 21:35:32 directed to [Baren] exchange enthusiasts, but will do it to the list. Graham PS there may be few details that will transpire person to person direct later on, but at this stage inclusion is healthy. ------------------------------ From: StudioJNC@aol.com Date: Tue, 4 Aug 1998 08:15:09 EDT Subject: [Baren 1294] Off list Since I am a Newbie to the Computer AND to Baren, What is off list ? I did write a letter to Dave to his Web Page as that was the only thing that I could figure out. Anyway, I am certainly For a Print Exchange as long as all those who have been doing woodblocks for years do not mind a beginner. I might send you all a "stick figure" ! Now, to be serious. I have been working in oils for more years than I care to remember so now I am doing a woodblock with oil based inks. I want to start one in the Hanga style of printing but it really looks very difficult. What does rice paste do for the watercolors? Does it act as a binder, make it more tacky, enables it to adhere to the wood better? I keep reading about the paste and have not a clear definition of its purpose. Perhaps I missed something along the way. Also, when the dampaned paper is stacked together, since it is so thin , isnt it difficult to separate without tearing? Please forgive these "beginner" questions. I just want to do it correctly, perhaps I should just jump in and profit by my mistakes.
