She must have said his name 50 times during the course, so I remember that distinctly. She got an MFA from the California College of Arts and Crafts (CCAC), in Oakland, a highly respected art school. She was a good teacher, although somewhat authoritarian. I promoted her giving a demonstration of Asaian printmaking techniques at San Francisco State, at the art gallery. Although I was unble to attend, the gallery people thanked me profusely and said that it was one of the most successful demonstrations they ever had. McKay started my lesson by cutting off some of the handles of my woodcutting knives! She showed us how to hold the knife in the nook between the thumb and forefinger. She said there is more control that way. It takes a little getting used to. I'll try to remember to draw a diagram of this knife position when I get home. I don't know if she studied in Hawaii, but it is quite possible that she did. Is that the same person you met? I had the lady's business card there for a few years, but never anticipated contacting her so tossed it out. The name did not stick with me. There must now be _2_ ladies in Sausalito doing woodcuts! Thanks for the response. To All Baren Members, I have been doing a little more experimenting with the computer in doing my drawings for future woodblock prints. They're quick and easy and cheap to print off the computer, if anyone is interested in seeing a "mini" version, I'd be happy to print one off and send it your way. Now that I have my printer back from the repair shop it's in top form. This is of course _nothing_ like the real thing, but about postcard size, and not too unattractive. Let me know if anyone's interested by sending me your home address, and send it to me direct so we don't clog up Baren mail. My latest is a lighthouse, oops, Graham may be after me for that! This one is not on the Canadian seacoast however, so Graham, I hope you don't feel like I'm invading your turf. I'm curious, what kind of printer and computer do you have? Graham ------------------------------ From: Gary Luedtke Date: Sat, 22 Aug 1998 19:49:48 -0400 Subject: [Baren 1427] Re: Baren Digest V4 #252 Graham et al, I work on a Quantex Pentium 200 and use an Epson Color Stylus II printer at 720 dpi. I'm curious to see something printed on the new 1440 dpi printers but am quite happy with the results from this one. The quality does not justify the slow speed at the dpi. I have tryed the 720 dpi and it is not worth using compared to the 360 dpi and fine the quality perfect. I use this on catalogues and brochures and is on par with any commercial stuff I use to order. Graham Someday everybody will use a Mac and wonder why they bought the other thingy. ------------------------------ From: Gary Luedtke Date: Sat, 22 Aug 1998 23:19:03 -0400 Subject: [Baren 1429] Re: Baren Digest V4 #252 Graham, Thanks for the tip, I won't buy a 1440 then. I am surprised however that you prefer 360 to 720dpi. I find the 360 fine for quick printing something just to see what it'll look like, but I prefer the better quality 720 to get an even better idea. I guess it depends a lot on what type of things you're printing also. Are you doing graphic type things with 360 or lettering and such? For lettering and text the 360 is great, but I get too many lines, even if they are faint, in a 360 graphic. How's the weather up there? Gary, surely you meant 'invading your surf' ... Dave (What a drag!
