[Baren]: The mailing list / discussion forum for woodblock printmaking. Baren Digest Friday, 28 August 1998 Volume 04 : Number 257 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Matthew.W.Brown@VALLEY.NET (Matthew W Brown) Date: 27 Aug 98 10:02:40 EDT Subject: [Baren 1450] Freezing On freezing paper: It would seem to make sense that freezing might soften paper sizing. I have not done much freezing of the handmade kozo papers. Mostly I have 'frozen' the mold-made Rives which is cotton and internally sized, and haven't noticed too much difference after freezing. Certanly not as noticeable a difference as I noticed when I didn't freeze: . . . pink, grey and purple spots all over the sheets! (With little kids and etc. and etc. in my life I can't always schedule my printing as I (or my papers) would like!) Depending on my blocks I frequently use an ategami sheet, so perhaps haven't picked up on a little softening that has been going on. Dave, you wrote: >-- we can forget it for bamboo skins this year. What few skins did come off the plant in good condition, rotted as fast as they fell. We're going to have to depend on Chinese and Taiwan imports again this winter. Not to be nationalistic about this, but the stuff they send isn't really suitable for printmaker's needs< Can you speak a bit about the difference here that you refer to, in the Japanese versus imported bamboo skins? I won't post the complete list now (I'm saving that little typing task until 1 September, but suffice to say that confirmed participation for the first [Baren] exchange now stands at twenty-three (with three or four people still undecided), with Patsy Wilson and Elisa Flynn having been the most recent to say, "Me, too!" If there is anyone out there who, like Julio, isn't quite sure whether they are officially on the list of participants, please write to me personally for confirmation. The participation deadline is ticking away (less than a week now), but as Dave said yesterday, all are welcome to join in (including lurkers).
