Actually, it was very nice to be away from newspaper, TV and all other distractions for a couple of weeks to concentrate on nothing but art. VCCA is an art colony in central Virginia that artists apply to for a residency. It isn't free, but it is subsidized. Application process requires two letters of recommendation from professionals in your field, and ten slides of recent work. What you get is a modest bedroom in a residence hall, three meals a day, and a private studio up the hill in a renovated dairy barn. Writers, composers and visual artists attend from two to six weeks. It is strange to tell, but everyone works very hard, and all the freedom produces a tremendous amount of work. I did a series of large watercolors, planned out several woodcuts, and cut the blocks for our Baren print exchange. It is a little difficult to set up a hanga printing station in a strange studio, since it doesn't have tables the right size or height, so I only proofed, not editioned. I did a lot of drawing and cutting, though! I know all of you who are participating in the print exchange will be happy to hear that my exchange print looks great: four colors...but I'm not telling what it is! I hope Dave will be able to post them for all to enjoy once we complete the project.
