Congratulations to Graham!.......it sounds like a wonderful milestone for your career.......much deserved, I'm sure. Thanks for sharing the particulars with us......that we might enjoy a vicarious pleasure in your future plans. You say you will not take part in the print exchange.........but will you have time to continue to post to the Baren? Very important. Second....... I, also, had a difficult experience in getting an MO at our local POffice.....had to go to the nearest large city because the local people said their International MO was not for Japan. Of course, I found out the fallacy in that when I finally purchased one. This adds to my growing frustration and anger with all our institutions....public utilities, etc. that one would hope were there to provide a service for the consumer. (I'm still smarting from a tangle with a uncooperative telephone operator.) My age is showing.......I remember a better day. I'm posting by my drawing board Graham's Matisse qoute....... Eliz. I went to my small local P.O., asked for the money order, and five minutes later was out of there. I agree with Liz that far too many of our intistutions todays do not seem to care but this one is so simple that I am amazed. Too tips for the future: First, establish a working relationship with the postmaster. I always introduce myself to him/her as soon as I relocate to an area. Tell them what you do and what supplies you will need on hand. Every P.M. I have ever dealt with has been wonderful to work with. Second, if a window clerk tells you their M.O.'s are not good in Japan, tell them they are and ask for the P.M. or supervisor and stand your ground. It is amazing how undertrained these people are and you just have to be friendly and firm with them. But getting an international money order should take no more than five minutes. The big problem is the large fees charged overseas for handling these type of interrchange. So, even though you are willing to pay more here, it's really unrealistic for Dave to cash such bank notices in Japan... he would be paying in some cases more than the notice is worth ! Did I get that right ? So under no circumstance buy or send a bank purchased notice. ------------------------------ From: Matthew.W.Brown@VALLEY.NET (Matthew W Brown) Date: 27 Oct 98 06:43:14 EST Subject: [Baren 1950] yen money orders On Money orders: I have had the same trouble buying money orders in yen, P.O.'s in my area will only do dollars money orders. But after this discussion I will try to press further with them. I have the understanding that Yamada Shokai won't take money orders, they want a bank draught of some kind. This has kept me from trying any of their papers; perhaps they have changed this policy recently? On removing blots: have enjoyed both Dave and Richard's postings on this subject. Have found myself doing pretty much what Richard describes, only in serious cases dropping on a good little pool of water and getting out a blade (knife) and VERY gently working the color back out of the fibers (light 'scraping' back and forth), pick up diluted color and excess water with a clean cloth or paper.
