Baren Digest Sunday, 22 November 1998 Volume 05 : Number 351 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: David Bull Date: Sat, 21 Nov 1998 23:09:27 +0900 Subject: [Baren 2163] Oops, missed again ... I see that I have again missed my deadline for the 'One-Point Lesson' ... Sorry about that, but from now up until exhibition time, it's going to be a bit difficult to keep to that routine. But actually, I have another reason for missing this time - I received the woodblock that I'll be using for my exchange print, and have been working on that. The preparation is all done, and I'll start carving tomorrow. Somebody mentioned a while back that they didn't want to see any pictures of the exchange prints before seeing the folio itself. If you are of that opinion, then don't go to: http://www.woodblock.com/surimono/process.html ... because the print you will see 'under construction' there is the one that I will also be using for my exchange contribution. *** Elisa wrote: > ... have to withdraw from the exchange ... I thought we might lose two or three along the way, and it seems that I wasn't too far wrong. But I would very much like to encourage the other members to maintain their enthusiasm for this project; I have spoken to a number of you privately about the prints you are planning, enough to give me a pretty good idea of what to expect when I open the folio next February. Elisa has had to make her own decision based on what is happening elsewhere in her life, but I think she is going to miss out on one very interesting collection of prints ... *** I got an invitation postcard in the mail the other day from one of my collectors who is also an amateur printmaker. The woodblock printmaking group at a nearby culture centre ('Ban Ban') is having their annual display week, and she wanted to let me know about it. I dropped down there this afternoon, and while I was there took some snapshots. I thought some of you might like to see them, so I've put a few up at: http://www.woodblock.com/temporary/ban-ban.html Dave P.S. I forgot to mention - my friend Sadako had some time and was able to record a complete set of words for that 'Dictionary of Japanese Printmaking Terms' in the Encyclopedia. Those of you who have got the RealAudio stuff worked out can now hear them read in a _proper_ accent. http://www.woodblock.com/encyclopedia/updates.html ------------------------------ From: Gayle Wohlken Date: Sat, 21 Nov 1998 10:15:06 -0500 Subject: [Baren 2164] Re: Baren Digest V5 #350 April said of baby oil: > A. It's mineral oil, disguised to smell like a baby! Then we can use plain old mineral oil and it would be the same as baby oil without the fragrance? In other words for cleaning up our boards, we can use mineral oil instead? Thanks for the tip! Thompson James Robertson Davidson Johnson Smith Anderson Adams Nelson III. (Gary) That ought to bring in a few sales, eh? Actually, congratulations on your web-site sale Graham. I have sold one or two that way, but it certainly is not a regular thing. I hear more and more people are shopping via the internet, maybe we'll see a gradual increase in business. Hope so. ------------------------------ From: Graham Scholes Date: Sat, 21 Nov 1998 13:32:59 -0800 Subject: [Baren 2167] Re: Wonders never cease Gary wrote.... > It occurs to me that if we are to sell prints via the internet with >your proven technique, I must change my name, to Smith perhaps. Therefore you can _enlarge_ your market by having a more common last name, right? If I change my name, which is not common, to one that is, I should then tap into the market of selling prints to people who share the same last name. The more people with the same last name, the more sales.................. ( I think you're just toying with me here Graham, but on the off chance you're serious, I've explained myself.) Anyhow, it was just a joke, and as someone once told me, "I hate explaining jokes!" Wonder who that was, eh? My apologies. Something may sound humorous in my head, but when I read it a few minutes later, it sounds awful. That'll teach me to fire off a posting without going back and re-reading it. Sorry.
