[Baren]: The mailing list / discussion forum for woodblock printmaking. Baren Digest Monday, 30 November 1998 Volume 05 : Number 359 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Graham Scholes Date: Sun, 29 Nov 1998 07:48:45 -0800 Subject: [Baren 2220] Re: Printing positions I'm not sure whether to envy or pity people that can sit cross legged kneel or squat on the floor to do work. Even a low bench (Suri-dai) would be impossible for me. One word says it all...arthritis.... If you go to my site http://www.islandnet.com/~gscholes/studio.html you can see the arrangement I have designed. It is very practical and more important comfortable. The first picture show the printing table in the foreground ...there is a plate in position.... under this (the dark space) is for the legs when sitting. Mostly I stand at the printing table as it is 36 inch (like a kitchen countertop) and I can really go at it. When printing small areas of a plate I will sit down on a high chair (drafting type thingy). When printing there are pull out board (24 x 30") left and right of the plate. The to-be-printed paper goes on the left and printed paper goes on the left. This whole table is 6 ft long 34" wide. When I made it, I intended it for storage then modified it to use as a printing bench. The whole thing is on 8 rubber rollers that allows it to move anywhere in the room. What's in the draws??? Prints, Drawings, Paper and sundry other stuff that one collects. The drawers on the right side of the bench are (see other picture with stove) are 42" wide and 33" long All of them are 3.5 " deep. The gallery /studio is a wonderful haven. I have been building it over an 8 years period... doing renovations and adding as the needs arise. The print studio is the latest addition and I had fun designing and building this part. It all happened just a few years ago as I was getting into the print making. When I go to waterless litho I may add to the structure for a press room....Umm Cheers Graham ------------------------------ From: Jean Eger Date: Sun, 29 Nov 1998 08:37:08 -0800 Subject: [Baren 2221] Re: Baren Digest V5 #358 Happy Birthday Baren, and thank you to David Bull. You have put in an amazing amount of time and effort into this web site. You have made the members feel really welcome. Like a good chairman, you have ushered the discussion along paths which are fruitful for the members. Also, you are creating a remarkable, integrated web site. You are open to new ideas from others. Most of all you are truly promoting greater understanding of ancient printmaking methods. Bill Ritchie: when I started creating my web site in 1995, http://users.lanminds.com/~jeaneger, my professor, Stephen Wilson, at San Francisco State University, asked me to research the web to find other printmaking sites. I researched with Yahoo and didn't find any other web sites about printmaking. A little later I discovered Mark Millman's home page. It's at http://eyelid.ukonline.co.uk/print/works.htm Then, it was just Mark Millman. Now it has grown to a huge wonderful resource for printmakers, with a board of contributors. It helps to have a board of advisors/contributors, because in publishing there is always criticism, and a board acts as a buffer to protect the publisher. However, Mark is still there as editor. It's nice to know there's a person behind Baren. I have been getting to know David, through Baren, a little bit better as the year has gone along. The more I know about him, the better I like him. So thanks again for your "free" lessons, David and for keeping this mailing list going. Did you come up with the design yourself? I know this is an individual thing, but what would the perfect studio have in way of design and equipment? I will be signing out of the group for a while, as my computer will be traveling in the bowels of a container ship on it's way to meet me in Hawaii. There I hope to be able to have time to put some of the many lessons I have read to use, to finally put the paper to the wood, as it where. On the computer side, I will be reconnecting in a couple of weeks, with a cable connection this time! So, keep the conversation going, I'll catch it in the archive. Thanks, Happy Holidays, and Aloha to all, Jack Reisland ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V5 #359 ***************************
