The three "shadowy" figures really suggest action well. I think one of the reasons it appeals to me is that it is so far away from anything that I would typically attempt. Anxious to see the final product... Think I'm done cutting. Just finalizing colors and should have some done this week! I really like what I see. Hope I can participate next time (there is going to be a next time?). I also recommend you go to the main library where they keep a list of artists. This are etchings but great art is great art. The balance and the spacing of the children at play are really nice. And the obvious very intent conversation of the two children in front is very sweet. You've done a great job of capturing the postures and movement of children. Nice work. I am *so* envious of all of you involved in the print exchange. Even though I'm probably not ready to participate in one myself. Wanda ------------------------------ From: "Jeanne N. It is so ambitious that I am feeling a little guilty!!!!! Will love to see it completed. How much fun and provacative the print exchange is going to be!!!! Question to Dave or James; Since the box or whatever that we send the prints in will have to be large enough to hold the portfolios that Dave is so kindly providing, what dimension should the box be to insure that it WILL in fact be large enough for the portfolio. If this has been discussed, forgive me, but perhaps it should be mentioned again. Jeanne ------------------------------ From: "Jeanne N. As you said "Art is Art". None of it should be ignored. I'm a bit tied and unable to answer them individually, so can I do it 'together' without seeming impolite? Matt's comment was typical of most of them: > Congratulations on finishing the last of the hundredth print! What an > amazing feeling that must be! It's very curious ... Just as I was sitting down to do the last colour, they stuck the mike in my face and asked me how I felt. "Nothing special. Just another colour ..." There is so much going on this week that it's impossible to really even feel anything about the printmaking work. When we got down to the last three copies, and I called the girls in to 'help' me, things felt a bit different. Fumi printed the colour on one (to be her own copy), Himi did hers, and then I did the colour on my own copy. I then just sat there not really thinking much about anything. My mind was pretty much blank. But when I looked over at Himi I saw that she was crying, and of course that started to pull some water out of my eyes too ... and then everybody in the room caught it. The producer was crying, the cameraman was trying to see through his lens while blinking and blinking ... a magazine photographer who was standing behind him had the same problem ... We got it under control a few minutes later, and then got busy - we packed up a set of the 100 prints and trucked over to the local community hall, where we set them up on the stage for a photo shoot. The cameraman and I are kind of hoping the photo will be picked up by the international news agencies, but that's a bit of a long shot. And now today, it's back to business as usual, trying to get the prints dried off in between the interviews - there are three scheduled for this afternoon so far: 1:00, 2:00, 3:30 .... I'll try and get down to the Post Office this evening to send off the cases for the [Baren] exchange, and when I get back, it'll be time to print the first colour on the new year card ... But I shouldn't quite say 'business as usual'. While I was in my workroom this morning, getting the paperwork ready for shipping out this print, Fumi-chan answered the doorbell. She brought me a letter that had just arrived 'Special Delivery'. I don't know if I dare tell you what it was ... It was an invitation from the Imperial Household Agency - I have to find a set of tails somewhere, and head over to the palace on the morning of January 14th to attend the 'First Reading of the New Year Poetry' ceremony, in the presence of the Emperor and Empress. It is very much a great honour to receive such an invitation, and when my neighbours hear about this they will fall down in shock ... a woodblock printmaker at the palace ... I tell you, sometime next year when things have hopefully settled down a bit, I'm going to be looking back on all this in disbelief. You have courted these successes through some tough terrain and it is very gratifying that you should finally achieve some recognition we all have known you deserve. And how wonderful that your daughters are there to share it with you. When you reflect on this later, I'm sure these moments will be savored for years to come, though I am sure more accolades will follow. I doubt if there is a member among us who at one time or another hasn't made a comparison between your dedication and our own, and then noticing the difference, went ahead a little further than before. In this is the measure of a true teacher, inspiring not only in words, but in dedicated action. Your daughters certainly have a father to be proud of, Japan certainly has a dedicated craftsman to foster with recognition and pride, and we Baren members stand in that line of proud associates as well. Savor what you have earned, enjoy your family, and have a wonderful holiday season. My best to all of you. And a warm Holiday Season to all Baren members, with best wishes for the coming year! Dave, Please accept my sincerest congratulations on the completion of the Series. And now, on to the royal family--- wow! It is truly a privilege to be getting to know you through the Baren Forum. Your work and words provide inspiration to us all. And to everyone, my best wishes for a happy, healthy, productive new year. It is wonderful to know all of you are out there printing away. Discovering this group of fellow woodblock enthusiasts is one of the best things that happened to me all year. Thank you! Happy New Year!
