[Baren]: The mailing list / discussion forum for woodblock printmaking. Gregory No. I was going to call him to ask but then don't want to get into the fray if he is servicing customers. I remember sending an e-mail and making a phone call leaving a message just over a year ago and neither were responded to until I followed up a second time. Boy I hate that...... just a small quirk with me. ------------------------------ From: woodcuts@concentric.net (D. Joseph/R. Roxanne The seal is clearly a name for Jean Egar, translated word by word for the sake of pronunciation. Sounds funny for a Chinese name, but it might work for anyone whose origin is not Chinese. Any Chinese person (I think) can identify that this is not a "Chinese" Chinese name because of its missing certain patterns. What I mean by this is that a given name should compose and provide some kind of meaning, in my case, Tzuchi indicates a unique child. Well, the seal is reading as the sound of EgarJean with the order of last name first, then first name. The first charecter of the three can mean so many different things, depending on what comes behind it. In general, it can be either "dear" or "lay-on". The second character means some kind of ancient out-dated hand-held Chinese metal weapon with a big long wooden handle. The third Chinese character is also known for many Koreans (Chinese as well) as the last name "Kim", which means gold. The downtown Chinese engraver was using the pronunciation of "gold" to replace "Jean", I would say that is a good choice of word, because it sounds really close. The first character is also sounding right as the "E" for "Egar", but the middle one is shaky, because of its lacking another asoociated character for the sound of "r" as for "gar". In order to inmitate a sound of "gar" in Chinese, a "r" sound charater should be placed behind a "ga" charater. What I am trying to say is that Jean Egar will sound better in Chinese if 4 charaters are structured. This name composes no specific meaning as I said earlier, and perhaps it reads (in Chinese) as "nonsense". The unknown mystery is solved, I hope. ------------------------------ From: Ramsey Household Date: Sun, 10 Jan 1999 10:42:15 -0800 Subject: [Baren 2635] Moving I am temporarily unsubscribing. We are moving to Oregon this week. I will miss you all during the time our computor is down. Don't get into too many interesting discussions while I'm off! This is a great list and I feel like I know you personally from all the messages. Thanks for the address for the stylus! I think it's pretty interesting how many printmakers seem to feel comfortable using computer images...I do think there's a relationship. Anybody else think printmakers are more susceptible to Photoshop than, say, painters? Oops, never mind, I forgot we're not talking about digits for a month! And check the contents on that Wonder Wash, it sounds great, but I have my suspicions about what's in it...sort of like that orange goop of James, betcha there's some sort of poisonous solvent in it! I have the need to simulate gold and wonder if anybody kept or has the details of the postings. Thanks Graham ------------------------------ From: Gary Luedtke Date: Sun, 10 Jan 1999 20:46:41 -0500 Subject: [Baren 2638] digits Could I get the address for those styluses again? I tried it with the address listed at the time but got a "could not find" message and didn't try again. Thanks.
