Thanks for your concern. I did field a number of calls from worried relatives back in the States. The whole thing was pretty ugly. In many ways this is not a safe place for printmakers. The day I introduced myself to BA5 three weeks ago we had bombs go off in two local bars here, killing half a dozen and injuring (like missing body parts) 35 or so. And that was here in Kampala, not in a game reserve someplace. The target, as in similar bombings last year, was gathering places of Westerners and locals... Still, there are many attractive things: I've worked in shorts and sandals every day for the last six months; I open the double doors of my studio/press onto a scene of tropical flowers, fruits and plants, with birds as big as my kids walking the lawn or nesting in the trees overhead... But then there's the snake our night guard killed in the compound: a 38-incher (that's a meter for your Canadians) that I'm told was highly poisonous. But Julio, we should be talking about this on BA5 -- where the snake'll be an 80-incher (that's, oh, 10 m or more for you Cheeseheads...) and I had to wrestle him to the ground with nothing but my baren... ------------------------------ From: April Vollmer/John Yamaguchi Date: Fri, 5 Mar 1999 00:12:18 -0400 Subject: [Baren 3383] Saints JJ&D make my day Well, I was one of the quick Fedex ones, so I got it! Wow! What a treat to see so many different prints. Relationships are there, but LOTS of variety. Matt's outdone himself with very nice cutting showing through his Egyptian columns. Great to see Grahm's soft colors in person. Elizabeth's strong color & bold pattern is wonderful. Jean's is charmingly silly, with helicoptors!!! Andrea's got an elegant black and white design. James, Richard, Ray, Haydee, great to see....And I was frustrated not to be able to read the names on a couple of oil base bleed prints with great design, and lots of rich color. There were even people whose names I didn't recognize! Hope to figure out who's soon! And of course Dave's exquisite workmanship cannot be appreciated over the internet, there is so much going on in his perfect little print! Calligraphy, blind embossing, bokashi...amazing! All of the prints are wonderful, thank you all, receiving this wonderful little package in the mail today made my day! Any Barens and Barenettes in NY and not on the exchange are welcome to view my portfolio. It is different in person, lots of great paper, the texture is so different from what you see on screen. And special thanks to Dave for the fitting colophon and Japanese portfolio, and James for his super collating and taping. A job I'm sure he is happy to pass on to our well organized friend John! Thank you all! Ran like a madman across the street to pick up the package when I saw the "attempted-to-deliver" slip in my mail (the FedEx office is across the street from my house !). My younger son and I sat quietly in a corner and opened the package.......WoW ! April....I believe the prints were arranged in alphabetical order per artists.....just check the colophon page...Amoss first, Yoshida last....at least that's how my package got arranged.....great job James! Dave, Love that folio box, my son could not get his hands off of it ! It is so elegant looking, well worth the price!!!! I won't give out any details (just in case we are suppose to wait till is officially put on the net) but my son's favorite print is John's (Amoss...). My Maria liked many of them...but singled out.....Ray Hudson's, Haydee's, Karla's, Hideshi's and Sarah's (she's into color!). I loved them all.......I can now see Ray's obsession with red dresses and dancing ! I got them framed and hanging on the wall already.......(Just kidding Dave!) See Ya.... Yes, but did you remember to turn _out_ your room lights? Nothing kills a woodblock print deader than dead than to have light pouring straight down onto it from the ceiling lights ... Turn 'em off. Turn 'em _all_ off. Take the prints to a table or someplace near a window (north facing, or cloudy day ...), and you won't believe what you see. Dave 'one-track' Bull *** Re: opening of the new ftp site and the recent virus attack. Please note that there is no connection at all between these two events. The ftp site is simply a place where you can put files, and indeed a couple of members have already made use of it to send me scans. A 'happy' virus slipped past the mail server the other day, as an attachment to a posting, and may have caused problems for some of you. Sorry about that! The only relation between these two events is that they both remind us - please don't send attachments to the list ...
