That one-point lesson is one of the clearest, most interesting step-by-step explanations I've ever seen. ------------------------------ From: Gayle Wohlken Date: Wed, 10 Mar 1999 09:11:45 -0500 Subject: [Baren 3490] Re: Baren Digest V6 #482 I have just read Dave's one-point lesson about wood shrinkage. Does this shrinkage go for oil based also? I was just about to do a second color on a differently turned piece of wood--grain going the opposite way (to save a lot of cutting, etc.) Should I follow Dave's advice even for oil base printing? Do you oil-based printmakers know the answer? I was going to work on this today. Does this shrinkage go for oil based >also? Gayle I cannot give you a definitive answer based on experience. I am sure others can. But just common sense says it is the wood not the medium. Shrinkage is a natural effect of wood aging. Whta kind of ink or pigment you use should have zero or little affect on the block. But why take the chance? After reading Dave's excellent lesson, I for one would certainly follow his advice. What a beautiful and clear description of the solution to a problem for old print makers! Thank you - and I love your kids too. The differential shrinkage of wood is a result of the wood loosing moisture over time, and will occur even if it is not used to print at all. The only difference is that water based printing will cause a little more initial expansion in the first place, but not change the rate of shrinking. Thanks to everyone who let me know I had caught the virus and for the advice on how to get rid of it. What a pain in the ass. Our computer was down for days and is still acting a bit funny. The portfolio arrived and what a gift it is. I know everyone has been talking about it and some of you joined to late to participate but I have to add my impressions. It was a wonderful idea from the beginning and the presentation and collection of prints are outstanding. I think we are all planning the next prints already. Skill, energy, innovation, passion, and sensitivity are words that come to mind. I will treasure my copy. All you need to do Ruth, is send me the image(s) you wish people to see. If you have any images already scanned in, you can upload them to: ftp.woodblock.com/incoming or try attaching them to an email (to _me_, not to the list). If you don't have any electronic files, you can send me photographs or even the prints themselves by mail. I'll scan them in and then return them to you ... By the way - I haven't been sending readouts from the web site logbooks recently, but can tell everybody that the 'Who is Baren' page is one of the most visited pages on the site, getting far more visits each day than there are members of [Baren]. It's not bad exposure I think ... *** Interesting to read your process note, Dean: http://home.earthlink.net/~interpoetics/db/notes_on_baren_exchange_print.htm When the folio goes up to the web site, I'll put a link to your page from your print. Anybody else who has similar material (or wants to do something like that) is highly encouraged ... *** Still waiting for the folio to arrive ... Jim, you didn't put it on a _boat_ did you? I just wanted to let everyone know that there is a possible print exchange starting on another printmaking list. It's not all relief printing, but that could lend to a good variety of work in the exchange... Go to www.onelist.com and look for the [Printmakers] list... The address for the list is printmakers@onelist.com Brad A. Schwartz ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V6 #483 ***************************
