I am using relief ink. Daniel Smith sells special relief ink, oil based, for woodblock printmakers. It's a great ink and you don't have to do anything to it. I have never gotten halos except when I have used oil paint (which I don't use anymorefor printing) But if you are using etching ink, it is stiff, so I guess you would have to do something to it. Etching ink does need plate or flash oil to get ready. I will try the DS relief inks. Much better than the linseed oil which I had used much more sparingly previously. I have tried etching inks for color which I was unable to attain with the relief ink ranges...BUT it was so impossibly stiff that I gave it up.........ElizA ------------------------------ From: Date: Mon, 15 Mar 1999 12:32:38 -0500 (EST) Subject: [Baren 3547] Re: Emeralda Dream Elizabeth wrote: > I think I've missed something somewhere! What is this post referring >to????? It sounds intriguing! The posting refers to Bill's exchange print Emeralda Dream. Bill creates "living prints". I don't want to try to explain his concept for fear that I will leave something out....but just let's say that there is something you need to do to the print. A clue is on the back side in the postcard info.......you can check out Bill's web-site where he explains his ideas and designs and his concept of the Emeralda world......and living prints...you cab get the www from the Baren Who-is-Who page.... At Marylhurst University, we use Daniel Smith Relief Ink for the black & white prints, and we use a couple of drops of cobalt drier mixed in well. We have all that other stuff on the shelves, but no one ever uses it. I'm not sure what kind of ink the colored inks are - I'll look at them next term & see. With those we use a transparent base and also mix in a couple of drops of cobalt drier. Hint, hint! ------------------------------ From: "Ray Esposito" Date: Mon, 15 Mar 1999 13:08:28 -0500 Subject: [Baren 3551] Re: Emeralda Dream There is of course, another thought about Bill's print that has not been brought up. If you do bring up the hidden print in Bill's print, that is the end of it. But should you? Does Bill really want us to look at the hidden print? Does that change forever the original print? It is fun to think about. For now, I am just going to jmn? (that last was my cat walking across the keyboard. It is cat for hi, Baren members.) To continue, I am just going to leave my print alone for now. It is a brillent idea. I would never have thought of it and thank you, Shireen, for sharing that technique. As for the slide show, it is a treasure. I, too, am very jealous of those who got the print packets, but the slide show does make up for a lot! I agree with the other posting that a little cobalt drier is de rigueur, else you have to wait till a week from Sunday before it dries. By the way, I was amused by the blurb on the back of my tube of DS #79: "Formulated using burnt plate oils and the finest pigments, Daniel Smith Relief Inks are professional quality colors for use with woodblock, linoleum and intaglio relief printing." Hmmm...I wonder what "intaglio relief printing" is? Gotta try that sometime. All right ... the smoke has cleared ... the noise has started to die down a bit ... The first [Baren Exchange] has wrapped up - quite successfully, I think. So where do we go from here? We do it again, of course! But [Baren] membership now stands at 80 people, and that's going to mean a bit of a different approach ... Information on [Baren Exchange 2], and the sign-up sheet, can be found at: http://www.woodblock.com/forum/exchange_sign-up.html Important note: Before you panic and rush over there in order to be one of the first to join, please note that sign-up doesn't start until next week (I want to make sure that even people who don't read their email every day know what's going on here ...) Second important note: The dates/times for sign-up start are given in Tokyo time (naturally!). Don't forget that Japan is near the dateline, and when it is 10:00 am March 22nd here, it is evening of March _21st_ over in America ... Will I see _you_ in [Baren Exchange 2]? ... or [3] ... or [4] ... Dave ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V6 #488 ***************************
