Marco, you must have a popular site. I can't get into it. Netscape just sits there with comets flying and nothing happens. Guess I have to wait in line. Sometimes I have a Love Hate relationship with computers!!!! Jeanne Yes, Yes, Marias Web site is great!!!! It takes a long time to get to the images and when I did I had to keep going back to the main page to go to another. I saw a couple of images but .... no time .... takes too long too set up...too long to move within the site and your symbols were too confusing. I always remember to first rule......KISS ..... 'Keep it Simple Students" My 2 cents worth I liked the two images I saw and would like to see more but.....well you got the idea. I'm still not caught up, but I wanted to thank everyone for the wonderful binder info. Okay, GrAhAm, thanks for the name correction! I use the methyl cellulose as a thickener-smoother, which I add on the block as needed to make the color thicker or thinner. (For example I use less when I'm printing fine lines so the color doesn't blob up.) As Daniel Kelly says, to control the viscocity. I thought it was too weak to be considered a true binder. The binder in the sumi ink is an animal glue, so I suppose it makes sense it could be added to pigment. I have been using gum arabic instead, though maybe I don't need to add anything. Thank you Dave, Jack, Daniel and everyone, this is information I've been trying to clarify for a long time now! I am preoccupied at the moment with a visit from my brother and his family, but I wanted to thank everyone for the BINDER input!!! More when I catch up! Do you _have_ all those > books in your library?!? Thanks all, for your nice comments. I have already received some contributions for the mural; should be fun to look at in a few weeks. Yes, all those books and more in my library, good thing my hubby likes making bookshelves! There are still a few more books on printmaking and Japanese prints that I haven't had time to catalog; I've read them all, is the scary part. Not much of a TV watcher! I will put inside photos of the studio very soon, my scanner got tired and wanted a day off. I have again been browsing through some of the baren members web sites; I recommend that to anyone looking for inspiration, what a talented group! I'm starting my first water-based print and very excited about it. Health to all, Maria in LV ------------------------------ From: April Vollmer/John Yamaguchi Date: Sat, 3 Apr 1999 00:50:43 -0400 Subject: [Baren 3817] Secret Agents I had trouble with Marco's and Michael's sites, the first doesn't seem to load, and the second had too much Java...hope to catch you both later! Maria came through loud and clear. Glad to hear James Mundie is toiling on another project, havn't heard his voice lately. And of course, it is always a pleasure to see what Dave has been up to! I love the Hokusai manga, what a great way to start your surimono series. It should be interesting to use the work of a variety of ukiyo-e artists. Your newsletter was excellent, and gives a little more detail about your project...it was very moving to read some more details. As I mentioned, I appreciated all the technical details of binders and viscocity agents from everyone. I guess it makes sense that ox bone glue is a binder for Japanese colors, since it binds the sumi ink used in printing. I've tried to clarify this issue for a very long time now, It's great to hear from people who have experience. I'm not ready to try a print for the second exchange....it was too much work to do very often! Sarah Hauser and I did meet with Judy Mensch of Manhattan Graphics about showing the first exchange. I think it would be a nice way to let people know about Baren. We all talked about how special the project was: the contrast of this very old traditional technique being shared over the internet, in this very modern, international forum. It really is a special thing! (I guess we know that already!) And to follow up on a note from last week ('don't tell Graham'), I have been enjoying working in Photoshop 5, some great new features. I have been using it to plan out images for my woodcuts. I print them in black and white and then transfer them to my blocks. Another traditional/contemporary contrast, I guess. P.S. hope I havn't been missing too many good jokes on BA5? To all of you who spent the time and took the trouble visiting my site, and especially for graham, my home page is at : http://www.t0.or.at/~mikasch This site should be no problem for any browser and fast loading (only one simple gif-animation is integrated), but as working on the cd-rom project was so time consuming, I was not able to update the site recently. The site: http://www.t0.or.at/~mikasch/rekon/start.htm is a watered down version of the cd-rom, just to make it possible to have a glimpse on what the cd is like. It is not designed for easy access but to offer many different ways of exploring the contents and discover on your own. The cd-rom comes with the netscape communicator 4.5 and was designed for this browser. (MS-browser do not support the java-scritp I used) Despite all that, I am able to offer a short cut to the list of images: http://www.t0.or.at/~mikasch/rekon/cd_html/videod.htm michael ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V7 #512 ***************************
