Beth--good luck finding paper makers! When I was in Hangzhou papermaking was the one art that was impossible to find--printmaking, ink making, etc. but I was told for outsiders papermaking was difficult to observe. The instructor, Lu Fang, had some special paper made for our class--heavy & very absorbant--but when we asked to visit the papermaking site he said that probably wasn't possible. But I wish you the best in your attempts. You must tell us all about it when you get back! On another note, Barbara and I had a long lunch together yesterday and had a wonderful time discussing Baren, Graham's workshop and art in general-but especially printmaking. It is so gratifying to meet so many artists on this forum. And even more fun when we get to meet in person! And you should see Barbara's latest prints - they are gorgeous! Upon reading this I thought.....can't imagine it, but I did.....that it would be a neat idea for you guys attending the workshop to bring along some prints.... I'd love to see the in the real stuff. We should do this only if everybody attending is comfortable with the idea. We would love to do so, and will bring anything else we think we might need. Wanda has done some great prints, she is taking a class from Dennis Cunningham who is very well known in this area for his linocuts (he is into fishing in a big way)and I loved her reduction print. I think you can never see too many prints, I could look at them all day. It is the next best thing to making them! See: for an picture of what I mean. I just can't shake using it as I would a pen. Since I am using a relatively soft wood (basswood), I don't need much downward pressure. This "penholder" grip seems to offer good control so far and Ms. Kuroiwa in the "Japanese Woodblock Workshop" video holds it like I do... Questions: (1) How many of you are using the hangi-to like me? and for those who use the traditional grip- (2) what am I missing? Thanks! - -John ------------------------------ From: April Vollmer/John Yamaguchi Date: Sat, 1 May 1999 00:13:00 -0400 Subject: [Baren 4267] Re: Baren Digest V7 #548 Wow, Jack, thank you so much for the tape, and lovley little book of translation! I didn't cry....quite! But it is wonderful to see David's look of rapt attention as he talks to the printer, cutter and papermaker. It gives a better sense of the dedication it took to do what he's done. And it is great that people in Japan are finding it important. I also wanted to say that Judy Mensch and I had a good meeting with the folks at the Manhattan Graphics Center. Manhattan Graphics Center is a printshop in Manhattan that offers classes in various print techniques. Judy has been teaching and working there for many years, and thought it would be of interest to show the first exchange portfolio in their small gallery area. We met the exhibition committee on Monday. I showed them my set of prints and they were very enthusiastic. They thought the portfolio was a unique print project, using the internet to share information, and they liked the variety of prints. However, when that committee presented the proposal to the Board, they were reminded that the bylaws reserve the gallery space for members only. The Exhibition Committee felt it that was an unfortunate limitation. In the interestes of compromise, they have created an "out-of-state/international" membership category at $20 a year. (regular is $35) If members of the first baren exchange are interested in pursuing this opportunity, it means paying $20 to become a member. Then we could proceed with an exhibit next fall for about a month, with a card and an opening where some of us could get together. It would be a nice way to meet one another and connect with other printmakers. Sarah Hauser, myself and Judy would be willing to take care of organizing the show. We decided that if 2/3 of the First Baren Exchange is interested, we could move ahead with it. Members who want to participate in the proposed show please write to Judy at: mensch@interport.net We would like to make a decision by May 15. Thank you!
