You don't have to use much turpentine then. The thing I dislike cleaning is the glass plate with the big sea of ink on it. Gayle ------------------------------ From: "Jeanne N. Chase" Date: Sat, 15 May 1999 10:36:10 -0400 Subject: [Baren 4395] Re: Baren Digest V7 #563 Gayle Funny , but cleaning the glass plate is easy and I do not mind it a bit. I have been cleaning my rollers with kerosene. Someone mentioned that kerosene is good for the rollers. i was using corn oil but that was just as messy. I guess I am looking for a good fairy to clean up after me. It gets everything up quicker and absorbs the oil. That is if your were talking about an oil based piece of glass? My guess is that any printing project requires careful clean-up. With oil based inks, I have been using kerosene for a long time......can't handle turpentine....ugh! I ordered a free sample of Soygold 2000 which someone recommended on the Baren. It is non-toxic.......I'll be testing it for this week's clean-up. I'd love to hear from anyone who uses it......ElizA ------------------------------ From: April Vollmer/John Yamaguchi Date: Sat, 15 May 1999 13:30:24 -0400 Subject: [Baren 4398] Re: Baren Digest V7 #563 Jeanne, I hope you're not saving all the good jokes just for BA5! Glad to hear we're getting closer to a quorum of First Exchangers for the Manhattan Graphics show. (Other interested parties will be kept in mind for the future.) It would be fun to have a show to promote Baren, and maybe give some of us a chance to meet one another. Manhattan Graphics is very well located, just east of the Soho galleries. The gallery area opens onto the workshop area, so everyone can see the artwork. The people in charge are very nice (this includes Judy who is a Baren-er besides), and lots of good printmakers work there. Sarah Hauser and I viewed Michael Schneider's book/CD yesterday. Very nice! Who published the book? My German is non-existent, I'm afraid! I kept getting "unexpected errors" when I tried to open the sound files, and for some reason I couldn't read the 'read me'! So we contented ourselves with what I presume to be the most essential part: the IMAGES. I have only Netscape Navigator 3, so perhaps that was the problem. [Where do I download the upgrade to Communicator 4?] I found that dragging the images into Netscape was much easier than trying to open them in Photoshop, for those of you next on the list. And forget the jpegs, go straight to the GIFs. If all else fails, the book has very nice pictures, too! Great work, Michael. I just saw Sigmar Polke's show at the Museum of Modern Art, and I thought there was an affinity. The contrast between the sophisticated printing and the crude mark-making was very nice. They did look like cave paintings, very suggestive, elemental signs. We had several discussions about showing the portfolio when the idea first came up and pretty much decided not to do it. But since there seems to be alot of interest and those who want to add the show to there resumes need at least 20 to participate I don't want to be in the way. I will therefore be happy to participate as well. I'm glad it is a space you know well and that it is attached to a working studio is also a plus. Let me know were and when to send the $20 and thank you for your perserverance. You seem to grow better each year. It's wonderful to see the progression. Ruth ------------------------------ From: "Jeanne N. I use that a lot and it keeps your hands from chapping from the harsh chemicals. Keith Howards Non Toxic Printmaking book also recommends corn oil for clean up. I work in a very small space and turps just takes over and makes it hard to breath. Even the Odorless smells a little. When you get the Soygold, I would be interested in the ingredients. If so, I would be interested. Thanks, Maria ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V7 #564 ***************************
