[Baren]: The mailing list / discussion forum for woodblock printmaking. Baren Digest Friday, 11 June 1999 Volume 07 : Number 592 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Kat Pukas Date: 10 Jun 99 17:39:19 MST Subject: [Baren 4609] sarah, thanks for the welcome and the hints about methyl cellulose. i actually do have some rice paste on backorder from mcclain's. unfortunately i cannot afford their 80 dollar video on the japanese printmaking methods, but i'm just going to see what i can glean from the baren's encyclopedia, word of mouth (or e-mail of finger, as it were), etc., and see where it takes me . . . )#( gayle, thank you very much for checking out my site. hmm, a play by play of how i work toolwise? i'm not really sure exactly what you're asking or how i could begin to answer. (my tools are dull and cheap, hee hoo! i own a stone, but . . . ) ah, it is very nice for you to say that my style is full of energy. i think sometimes the block leaves me aching at the end because i've invested so much energy into it (perhaps the dull tools again, methinks). the skeleton print was actually made by cutting at two sides (one black: the main coffin part; one yellow: his shirt, etc.) of a gum eraser and using it like a stamp on the inkbed (very hard to register). that was actual size. the day of the dead is really fascinating. it is perhaps the ultimate compliment right now to say that 'waif' is "stunning," so thank you. it is a self-portrait, and it is the most recent woodcut that i've done (i did it this may). :) )#( jeanne, more power to you, truly, if you "love the smell of turps and oils." i subscribed to the after five group--just for you! thanks! :) )#( sylvia, thanks! i wonder, was this "sense of humor" you associate with me evident in my website, relief prints, my e-mail, or . . . ? just curious. i find that oil inks themselves have a stuffy smell that i'm not sure i could enjoy even with paint thinner out of the picture (i'm not putting down oil-lovers or water-lovers, of course--this is just my own sensation/opinion). :) i haven't done a linocut ever, but i have cut on Sintra (a kind of plastic). the shavings from the Sintra were rather sharp and reminded me of fingernail clippings. eek. )#( lezle, here's the story: i was born in valentine, nebraska, although my family was living in rosebud, south dakota (on the rosebud indian reservation). we moved to aberdeen, south dakota--lived there seven years. then we moved to olney. maryland (north of washington, d.c.)--lived there 2.5 years. THEN we moved to rapid city, sd. i graduated from the high school in sturgis, south dakota, and then attended 1.5 years at the university of south dakota. my significant other, reuben, came up (from tucson) to attend 1 year of usd with me, but then i decided i would rather pay out-of-state tuition than have him take out all sorts of student loans to go to usd, so we moved to tucson, az, and began attending at the university of arizona. the u of a has 'alternative methods' printmaking classes (ont he undergraduate level), but i haven't taken any of them. they do things like cyanotypes, paper lithography, and other things in alt meth I, i think. i'm kind of staying away from the printroom for a while, because the professors in there, sheila pitt and saint a.p. gorny, remind me too much of my parents (physically and in some mannerisms--a very, very weird thing!). sheila pitt is head of the printmaking department, and while i had her as a prof, she seemed to be a very oil-based character. saint a.p. (who may or may not be leaving soon for a better job) is a brilliant guy, albeit veeeery talkative. i don't really know a lot about the grad school here, though. i think that almost all of the grad students are elitist/mean (which is different from at usd where undergrads and grads would have potlucks with lloyd)! are you in sd now? :) love <3 & lint * ! kat & reuben ------------------------------ From: "Lezle Williams" Date: Fri, 11 Jun 1999 10:03:46 +0900 Subject: [Baren 4610] Re: Dear Kat, I live right in Mission and teach a variety of art classes including printmaking at Sinte Gleska University. I've only been with the group for a couple of weeks- so as not to bore everyone-- if you are interested you can find my "intro" in the Baren archives #581. Thanks for the info on U of A. I read only this morning that Tucson is gaining 2,000 people a month. I found that rather scary (especially after these last few years on the plains in the middle of nowhere)! Keep me posted how you like it though... I tried the parchment paper but wasn't happy, then I remembered that I had an old roll of microwave browning paper which has a metalic coating that is slipery. (I don't know if it is still available) I was able to twist it and mold it around the disk and make a handle which I taped with clear heavy duty mailing tape. I'll let you know how well it works when I print. Felt sucessful anyway - better than failure any time. All I have to say to you Dave about "It's convenient, being changed with only a minute's work." is - maybe after ten years! Anyway I'm glad you and Graham can do it so easily - maybe some day. ------------------------------ From: Gregory Robison Date: Fri, 11 Jun 1999 09:26:32 +0300 Subject: [Baren 4612] Mojem li da se vidim? Bucharest, 11 June 1999 Dear Arafat: Will you be in Sofia over the next few days? I will be staying at 43 Oborishte (about four blocks west of the Academy, kum kanala) from tomorrow through Tuesday. I would love to talk to you about the project you just communicated to Baren (you can see that Baren, tho' apparently a modest little "virtual organization," actually has its agents everywhere...). If we can meet, please call Eli Romanova during normal business hours (today if possible) at 943 44 17 or 943 44 63 (offices of Caresbac-Bulgaria, AD, 45 Oborishte). Yours, Gregory Robison ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V7 #592 ***************************
