Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining about SFSU, which has the BEST teachers. (Good teaching is emphasized at SFSU because it started out as a teacher's college.) But the facilities at ASU Tempe are magnificent. I was staggered by the beautiful big art museum, built adobe style with no windows, so as to protect against the hot summer sun (my high schoolers would love to get their fingers on the light switches in there). We heard a talk by a founder of the printmaking department who mentioned how they threw money at it in the 40's or 50's. (I'm writing this from memory, so it could be the 60's.) Then we went out into the courtyard and a very nice gentlemen from SUNY in New York asked me what my impression of ASU was. I blurted out, I think they are made out of money, which of course was the wrong thing to say. So after that I tried not to talk so much, expecting to have to extract my feet any minute. They were wonderfully gracious hosts, and never gave me wrong directions while walking across the campus. The Sintra demonstration was very clearly done. Roxanne, I didn't really look at the printmaking studios with a professor's eye, so I can't describe them except to say there were a lot of them. SFSU has basically two printmaking studios, with three etching presses and three litho presses, last time I looked. ASU Tempe has a lot more than that. ASU Tempe is in the Sonoran desert, just for the information of the international Baren crew. Tempe is a suburb of Phoenix, a BIG city. My sweetie loves the desert, so we drove across it a few times in the last few years. I got a guidebook on deserts. One should learn the difference between a saguaro cactus and an ocotillo cactus. Next time we visit a relative in Long Beach, I'll definitely look you up, Roxanne. My mother has an etching that your father (I think) made of a man in a wide brimmed hat with his face all in shadow. That was your father, who was a famous printmaker, right? By the way, the suggestion to print once on acetate was a good idea, but not mine. However, I think that would work for oil based, not water based. The rice paste ink would not stick to the acetate or mylar. I'm having fun working on Baren Exchange 2; coming up with Warhol colors, just by adding white to the ink (rice paste plus pigment). Maybe it's the real me. I grew up in the Phoenix area, and graduated from ASU, although that was a long time ago. I knew the ceramics department best but you are right, the art facilities were VERY good, and have gotten better since I was there. They tried hard to attract the best faculty members they could get, and had a very good visiting artist program. They also have very good art collections in many fields. Tempe is a nice place to live (better than most of the rest of the Phoenix area), but it got hard for me to bear the summer as the years went by. I used no glue at all. I simply stretched the wet skin over the mounting board and used upholstery tacks around the edges. Put a lot of them in because as it dries, it gets tight as a drum and will pull out the tacks if you don't have enough in. Still tight as a drum a year later. Since I'm going to be gone the month of September- I'm waiting to see if it looks like it will be October or November- I don't want the added responsibility of doing an edition before I leave. And I'm sure when I return fron Italy I'll be all fired up with inspiration! If it doesn't work timewise- I'll certainly be at the front of the list for the Baren #4.
