Sounds like a great idea. A request, though. Since the member count has recently increased a bit, can we place a few limits on the print? How about a small size and only one color, maybe black. Comments? Kim Kaschimer-Medina Tucson, AZ ------------------------------ From: Graham Scholes Date: Thu, 17 Jun 1999 07:40:38 -0700 Subject: [Baren 4674] Re: Baren Digest V7 #599 Morning Kim, The number of persons participating has been set at 30. On this basis there is no increase in members on any given exchange. Size has been .... about 10 x 15 .... however participants have made the image smaller.....you just can't make it bigger. As far as colour.....well this is an individual choice. If you can do it in no colours and call it "The Shadow Knows", then so be it. Graham ------------------------------ From: "Jeanne N. Chase" Date: Thu, 17 Jun 1999 11:15:18 -0400 Subject: [Baren 4675] Re: Baren Digest V7 #599 Dear Kim You can make it smaller and then affix it to the required size with a strip of PH adhesive. Several printmakers in the group prefer black and white and there is nothing as dramatic as a good black and white. So your choice is yours. A Self Portrait is a great idea. Can I do a Self Portrait of myself as Marilyn Monroe? In a red dress? Huh, Graham? By the quick responses I can see that this could turn out to be a popular exchange !!!! Nice idea Maria A. ------------------------------ From: "Jean Eger" Date: Thu, 17 Jun 1999 09:31:34 -0700 Subject: [Baren 4677] Re: Baren Digest V7 #599 I, too, think a self-portrait would be a good idea for the next print exchange. I like to do a self portrait every so often just to check up on who I am that year. They are equipped to do water-based screen-printing, intaglio, lithography and relief. I think that there are facilities for doing photo-screen printing as well. They have a decent library of stones and have several litho presses and at least 2 (I think!!) intaglio presses. There is a nice roomy entrance area, kitchen/lunchroom area and a spacious gallery space upstairs with windows that look out onto the printmaking shop so that patrons/interested persons can view the artists working w/o actually going into the studio. They also have a small frame shop to do work for the studio. It's a nice set-up, but this is based on my observations of about 5 years ago(I can only suppose that things have just gotten better). I understand that Glasgow, Inverness and Aberdeen also have printmakers workshops. I wish that I had seen them!! On Monday of this week he took me to an exhibit of Bulgarian printmakers at the National Palace of Culture, including work of his professors, dean of the Art Academy, etc. Very interesting. He has some plans he wants to discuss with me before presenting them to Baren, so I will maintain the silence to which I have been sworn, until the proper moment. Graham: I understand that John may already be in Canada, but that some of the other participants in the workshop (Barbara? Wanda?) may be driving up to Seattle to take the ferry or hydrofoil or whatever to Victoria. How's Marco arriving? If any of you other participants are monitoring this channel, may I propose that we meet in Seattle and take the ferry together? This way we can all be picked up at the pier together in Victoria. Also, if you need a secure place to leave the car, you can park it behind the wall at my parents' house on Capitol Hill in Seattle, and we can get a lift down to the waterfront. Come to think of it, why not cocktails dans le jardin of the family seat before boarding the ship, to fortify ourselves for the sea voyage and the week of work ahead? There is a sweeping view of the Cascades and Lake Washington from there, and I can show you the presses of my childhood (Vandercook SP-15; 1890's C&P platten press, etc.) before we bannish all such technology from our minds, fold our ankles up over our knees, and learn to chant whatever mantra the Master assigns us. John: If your e-mail has followed you, I also have a question for you: I have been carrying my Exchange Prints with me, from Africa to Romania, Bulgaria, Chicago and now to Seattle. Do you want me to deliver them to you by manual tradition in Victoria, or would you prefer that I mail them after I return from the workshop, so as not to have to hassel with carrying them around yourself? I find this a pretty good beginner baren, good for small work, and you don't have to worry about recovering it. Thanks for your help. I just completed my first hanga print and am truly converted. For one who loved cutting but hated printing I now am sleepless waiting for morning and the next block to print! I even figured out why the need paste, sizing, damp papers, for the surikomi bake and the maru bake, etc., etc., etc. - no more rollers and oily ink for me. Thanks again. If the Baren print exchange didn't have a set dimension, I might be better able to particpate immediately; however, there is a very specific dimension this time around, and I do not feel that I have adequate experience with spooning large pieces, plus I have no access to a pritning press until at least spring 2000. I hope to participate sometime in the future, though. Thanks for thinking of me. :) )#( Lezle, more on the u of a that you might want to know . . . the printroom is positioned on the third floor in such a way that it has a wall of small windows overlooking Speedway (a major, six+-lane, busy street in the middle of Tucson). i had the fortune of visiting the printroom of the university of california at santa cruz and was stunned by the contrast: clean vs. dirty, trees vs. cars, skylights vs. stained tile ceilings, etc. :) wow, i got a letter in the mail from the u of a art department; it said that i was one of 22 (out of 844) art students who earned a place on the dean's honor list with distinction; i thought this was funny because they told me in the latter that my gpa was really good for the scholarship process they have there (which i applied to before and didn't get)--and i swear there are more than 22 scholarships offered. :) i like my life. love <3 & lint * ! kat ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V7 #600 ***************************
