I'm sure those young people were delighted you let them talk about their worst teachers. * * * Welcome to John from Austrailia. It would be nice to see some of your work. Do you have a website? I, too, have a Vandercook Proofing Press, but I have not used mine yet, mainly because of where I have it located (in the cellar where the laundry is done--and when I say cellar I mean old time cellar with spiders and not enough light, etc.) We'd like to make a building on the property to house it. * * * I sent in my order for a baren from Woodlike Matsumura. I'm getting closer to waterbased hanga style--at least materialswise. Next come those pigments from Graham's pigment man. * * * Cleveland came through with kitakata paper, so I bought 30 sheets. So, John Amoss, I will make that deadline! It looks like you are far advanced in comparison to most of us. I, for one, look forward to learning from you and your experience. I am sure everyone is anxious to see your art work. Is it displayed anywhere? I think you can upload it to Dave Bull and he can display it somewhere. Do you work with oil or water-based inks on your woodcuts? You have a lot in common with one of our other members who is presently on vacation in the US - Greg Robison. He is also interested in letterpress things. So you two will have much to talk about when he gets back on Baren! Things are quiet right now, but will liven up soon, I'm sure. Can't wait until you get a web site, would love to see some of your work. I graduated from a National Arts Academy in Mexico that trains artists as teacherrs, so I divide my time producing my works and also teaching arts. Normally, I work in painting (oil, acrilic) and printmaking (etching, wood, drypoint, experimental graphic) simultaneslly, wich helps me very much since I'm a little nervious to concetrate in a thing for a long time. I just had my 12th. solo show (this time only engravings), but I had shown collectivily many times in countries like Germany, Cuba, Uruguay, Spain, including a solo show in India, where I held an artist-in-residence grant last year. I have decide to try with some woodblock works, printed in japanese style, so let's see what happens. For the moment, I share a web-page with two others peers, wich I would appreciate you to visit it: www.angelfire.com/on/artplastic Also, I'm about to upload a personal page where there will appear some woocuts. Friendly, Juan Guerrero ------------------------------ From: Wanda Robertson Date: Sat, 03 Jul 1999 19:46:54 -0700 Subject: [Baren 4834] Re:Juan Guerrero intro Welcome, Juan! You're paintings and etchings are fantastic - can't wait to see your woodcuts. We look forward to seeing your personal page soon. You will really be happy here, lots of good information and people willing to share their knowledge with us beginners to "hanga". Folks who couldn't attend may be tired of hearing the raves, but I must encourage those interested in learning hanga to take lessons from Graham, April Vollmer, Matt Brown, or any other experienced printmaker you can find. See: for Baren's list of this year's classes. I have read just about all of the books on Dave's library list along with viewing a how-to video tape, but they really DO go just so far. I know that I've saved at least 5 or 10 years of frustration by seeing things actually being done in front of me. Combined with Graham's help in troubleshooting, I learned enough to relax and enjoy the process- what a concept! Graham's pet name "Sponges" for us students has a double truth. Yes, we shamelessly took advantage of Marnie's wonderful hospitality and vacuumed copious amounts of food and drink, but our minds were SO saturated with information that it was all we could do to keep it all from leaking out of our ears! As I suspected, my fellow students were wonderful- not a surprise from such a wonderful forum. EVERYBODY, GROUP HUG!!! - ---- Welcome John K. and Juan G., Although I haven't seen your work yet, for some reason, I like you guys already! - -John Amoss ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V8 #617 ***************************
