Baren Digest Monday, 26 July 1999 Volume 08 : Number 640 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Gayle Wohlken Date: Sun, 25 Jul 1999 09:55:56 -0400 (EDT) Subject: [Baren 5079] Meeting James I thought I'd let everyone know I met James Mundie and his wife, Kate, yesterday. And I particularly want to thank Dave for this forum where artists from different parts of the globe can meet one another, not only online, but face to face sometimes. Since I wrote to Dave just a moment ago, with what our meeting was like, maybe he can add that to the baren messages and I won't be redundant here. Mainly I'm testing message posting from computers other than my own. We're heading back to Ohio today. Gayle ------------------------------ From: Gayle Wohlken Date: Sun, 25 Jul 1999 18:57:10 -0400 (EDT) Subject: [Baren 5080] Meeting James We met James at the Philadelphia Museum of Fine Arts and it was easy to recognize him since I had tried to draw him once from just descriptions he sent through emails. I wasn't that far off in my drawing! I knew Kate has red hair, and that James always wears a hat, so I saw a guy looking like my drawing, wearing a hat, walking beside a red haired woman, but they walked right past us and I had to chase after them. Just as they were purchasing their tickets I said, "James?" He said "Gayle!" and it was great fun from there on. We saw a lot of the Parrish paintings we had seen in books. We studied them up close to see just how he achieved those effects. Then we all headed over to the school gallery and the alumni show was being presented there which included a piece by James. Hoo boy, you should see James' work up close! Every tiny pen stroke works toward the end drawing. Control, control, control! The piece was of two carnival freaks in a "wedding picture" -- alligator man and bearded monkey girl. I don't have the title right, but this is close. Afterward we stolled over to Reading Terminal which is a produce market extraordinaire and, since we were starving, we had quite the time. James recommended Salumaria's deli where we ordered a James and Kate recommended vegetarian hoagie with special secret sauce. Then we put a couple tables together and talked, talked, talked. My whole family was enchanted with the Mundies, and the time went too fast. Gayle ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V8 #640 ***************************
