It's not every day that one of our own gets to be on TV. Soon you won't be able to go out with out giving autographs. I'll bet Himi and Fumi were excited, were they still with you? We sure appreciate their hard work of putting all that info into the encyclopedia. It leaves the three holes in the paper........which I do not bother to cut off in most instances because I matt my work and that takes care it. For the Exchange print #1 and with careful calculations, I added the extra ell to allow for more paper on the bottom for the punch......paper which could be cut or torn off to comply with the size requirements. It's a great registration method....I could never get the hang of the traditional ways........ I was watching Dave's video documentary on his poets'series (again!) and it occurred to me that this was not only a great celebration of Dave's work, but also thanks to Dave of the lives of the other two men in the film (Mr. Ito & Mr. Shintaro). For however brief these men appear on film, it is surely a treat for those of us wanting to follow in their footsteps and for others that come by this video. How sad that this short clips of these masters at their work is all that future generations will have to treasure. How timely was the making of Dave's video to allow us a glimpse of these men prior to their departure. Thanks.........Julio ------------------------------ From: Jack Reisland Date: Thu, 29 Jul 1999 11:39:13 +0000 Subject: [Baren 5096] Re: TV broadcast notice ... Since we made that documentary - not just two men have passed away, but _five_ of those men have gone. First Ito-san the carver and Shimano-san the blockmaker. Next was Okura Hanbei, the top top ranked carver in the group, closely followed by Matsuyoshi-san, owner of the pigment shop you saw in the film. Then Noguchi-san, 'just' one of the printers ... And recently I heard that Sato-san, perhaps the most respected elder printer, is now in hospital. It's turning out to be a bad year ... *** Julio also said: > these short clips of these masters at their work is all > that future generations will have to treasure and Jack prompted me with: > You hear that, Dave? What Jack would like me to tell you is that when the documentary program finished up, the producer sent me a package of a half a dozen cassette tapes - all the footage of Ito-san that was taken when preparing the program. Instead of just ending up on the 'cutting room floor', about three hours of interviews and carving scenes are thus going to be preserved for the future. (When the internet 'grows up' a bit, and the bandwidth will allow clear viewing, I'll make them available for everybody ...) *** Barbara wrote: > It's not every day that one of our own gets to be on TV. As for them being 'excited' about the TV crew coming, I have to tell you that the situation is exactly the reverse. They asked me for the shooting schedule, carefully marked those times on their calendar, and made sure that they were out of here while it was going on. The girls will be here until early September, and the Encyclopedia is getting a great shot in the arm. Another complete book should be going up in a couple of days, and then their next contribution should be a page that they will make when I prepare a new sharkskin early next week ... I was wondering, does anybody in Japan outside of the printmaking circles notice these great losses? Jack ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V8 #644 ***************************
