ElizA Regarding which way the paper is put into the registration board, you answered my question. I guess I never thought of putting it in sideways. But, of course, it would work! Thanks. Why am I selling it..... Well, it seems the papermaker Kazuo Yamaguchi, trimmed the deckle edge off two opposite sides. He assumed the this paper was going to be printed on a printing press..... This does not affect the quality of the paper in any way and I will be using some of it for my smaller prints.....as I cut the paper down to size. Arrangements have been made to return some of the order for replacement with 4 deckle edges. Before I do this I am offering this paper for sale. Size 55 cm x 71 cm or 21 5/8" x 27 1/2" 8 momme heavy weight ...... $18.25 US$ 6 momme medium weight ...... $14.75 US$ For those not familiar with the weight, let me explain it. 175 gsm weight BFK rives paper is about equal in weight to 8 momme with a micrometer reading of .010 to .011 thickness. The 6 momme paper mic's at .008 to .009 thickness. Shipping will be added to this. We can advise you at the time of shipment. You can pay by cheque or Visa in US funds. My name is Pete White, and I am a printmaking student living in the general vicinity of San Bernardino, California. My interests in the area are varied, because I have only been studying the subject for six months and hope to learn more. I have a fledgling webpage at: http://www.geocities.com/Area51/5426/prints.html That's all I can think of for now. - --Pete ------------------------------ From: Barbara Mason Date: Sun, 01 Aug 1999 11:44:14 -0700 Subject: [Baren 5121] the new guy... Hi agatha, Yes it is...... I purchased 300 sheets and by adding the cost of tied up capital, shipping from Japan, duty and taxes it comes to the prices below. In the event you are not aware, this paper by Yamaguchi who lives in the west part of Japan near a town called Fukui. Dave tells me lives up in the hills from the town of Fukui, where he and his family have been making this paper by hand one sheet at a time for about 300 years...... They should know what they are doing by now.....(<: If you go to Infoseek you can find where Fukui is in Japan. http://infoseek.go.com/Facts?pg=maps.html and type in Fukui and Japan to get there. Seven years ago when I started this medium I was shocked at the price. I have paid as high as 33.00 Can$ per sheet ---- 24.00 US$ This was the price only if you ordered 300 sheets. If I were to purchase it from Japan Papers in Toronto it was $50.00 per sheet back then. Why use such expensive paper you may ask. There are numerous technical reasons which I will not go into. From a business point I was told, when I questioned the need of this quality of paper, that there are buyers out there that will not touch woodblock prints unless they are printed on Hosho paper. That said to me ..... do not exclude any buyers ........ for the sake of a few bucks for the traditional paper. It is *so* beautiful! I was afraid to print any of my beginner stuff on it, but at this discounted (nearly 1/2 the original price) I can't pass it up. I'll just *save* it until I get to be a better printer! Thanks for offering it to us, Graham. Enjoy Baren, nice folks here. How long have you been doing prints and are they oil or water based ? The new "luau" print is great, too. Good job! On the tools - definitely get a u-gouge (if that's the one you use the most) from McClains (or from Noburu Sawai through Graham) the best you can afford (around $20-$25) You will not be sorry! Get the ones with the split handle, they fit in your hand *so* well. You will not believe the difference! At Graham's workshop I thought: "Well, I have a couple of pretty good tools, I'll just get a few more to add to those." I wound up buying practically every one of the ones available, and do not regret it one bit. The really good tools make the difference between cutting the wood and fighting it. They even make a better noise as they slice through the block! Wanda Hooked on Hanga! ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V8 #647 ***************************
