I think the best bet for a class is the Yoshida (?) barens from Graham. About $30 they are just right for beginning printers working on small size prints. The white plastic ones from Daniel Smith are the same price, and don't need to be recovered with bamboo sheath, but they are not as strong. Also got a suggestion from printer Takuji Hamanaka to paint blocks with a THIN coat of gesso instead of varnish. Havn't tried it, but nice to keep waterbase.... 'Bye ------------------------------ From: "Philip Smith" Date: Sun, 15 Aug 1999 07:23:34 -0700 Subject: [Baren 5284] Re: Baren Digest V8 #661 Judy,...here's a thought on your baren purchase,...I've made my own and here's how: you get some rope,..[I've made them from many different diameters] coil it to the size you want, pin it in place on a board so it doesn't un-coil, get some of that rubberized, goop that coats tool handles,[at a hardware store] pore some in the middle of your coil, not to thin, then put a wooden drawer pull handle, size and shape your choice, into the center of this stuff,...when it all dries it'll be a single unit,..now on the bottom side,..the part you are rubbing on your wax paper, you take this same goop and glue a piece of leatherette cut to that size and shape,....ala, a "western" baren., ...for $30 bucks in materials you can make a couple of dozen,...and they work. This was shown to a class by Katherine McKay a few years ago, so it's not original with me. However, she didn't use cooking parchment.
