How long till you can work again? I don't suppose working on a computer would be much better. When I get sore hands from cutting, I change to doing stuff in Photoshop. But I guess I use my right hand for everything. I like your comments about collaboration. I have gotten great ideas about presentation from talking to people more experienced in another area, bookbinding in particular. We do need to share in that sense, I have learned a lot from master printers, from book artists, from computer artists and from letterpress printers. But I think that is different from actually collaborating with someone in the same field. I'd love to work with a letterpress printer and a poet to make a book. But I don't think I'd enjoy sharing the woodcut process, which is my field. I have too many opinions about how I want it to be, how it should be done. (which is why I'm good at it, I suppose!) Just think of a really creative book with different types of "Japanese Paper". I think it would look stunning. I have seen artists books with different types of paper and colors of paper. We could all illustrate some story. Like "Wuthering Heights". "Dracula" (hello Gayle), or a book of poetry, haiku or whatever. When the illustrations are finished and we all get our 30 pages it would be up to the recipient to have the pages bound. Then we could cleverly bind our books and send the Image of the covers to Dave. It would be another experience in creativity. I guess this could be another Exchange. Several people have voiced their interest in a illustrated book exchange. Perhaps Dave could table this for the future. What say you? I know several people on the Baren who are into that type of poetry. Each person could write his or her Haiku and then illustrate it. What a great Exchange that would be. Haiku really is very simple and the beauty is in the simplicity. There are many wonderful Haiku books out there. We could come up with a good list, so that the ones who are not familiar with Haiku could familiarize themselves with the art. Oh, that would be neat. What say you? It's full of pictorial images thank you Jeanne For bringing this to mind. I think bringing different views, ways of work, woodblock techniques and materials is going to make the exchange interesting and rich. Dave, What do think about considering 30 members as a minim for starting an exchanging and giving opportunity for the other members who would like to take part in the exchanges and for a reason they couldn't do this in the real time? Perhaps, since comments are requested, the message I missed could be incorporated into the comments prior to the actual ordering. Just a suggestion to keep me from feeling "moku high," ------------------------------ From: Shireen Holman Date: Sat, 28 Aug 1999 14:31:59 -0400 Subject: [Baren 5490] collaborative book i also really like the idea of a collaborative book. i agree with john that the paper used should be the same throughout the book. perhaps one person could provide the paper, and everyone could pay for their share plus shipping? some types of paper should work equally well with oil and water based techniques, so i don't think the techniques have to be the same. the problem will be coming up with a text everyone could agree on. and then we would need someone to print the text and bind the book. shireen Shireen Holman ------------------------------ From: "Jeanne N. Anyway, I am sure we could come up with a paper that we all could agree on. There are so many wonderful Japanese papers out there that i would be happy to print on any one of them and so many of them take oils and watercolors as well. I think it would be fantastic to then create our own covers for the text. Then we could submit the pics to the group (of the covers) THat way all each person would have to do is agree to the paper. Write their own Haiku and submit it as the Portfolio. Page one, 2, 3 and so on. Or even if it is Haiku, there would not have to be any order in the pages, just a wonderful little book of poems. Jeanne PS And if you did not want to make it a book, it would make a wonderful portfolio of Haiku and prints. Sometimes I get sooooo excited. I think I will go to After Five and have a drink. It is only 93 degrees here now!! I think if we really want to do one of the ideas, the logistics can be worked out somehow. For the "idea box" Dave, my 2bits in order of most to least favorite: - -book with 30 illustrations written by one of the poets in the group - -mosaic - -traditional collaboration, carver, designer, printer - -whatever other ideas have been thrown in the pot Also, speaking in favor of geography, I would volunteer to coordinate with the printmaking studio at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, to see if they would "host" (studio space, some materials, eager student audience), a 3-5 day collaboration project. I would provide the bunk beds! I'm thinking late 2,000, when everyone is sick of the cold countries and wants to spend a few November days in 70+ degree weather. I'd throw in a hike or two. What a great time! The added plus is that we could meet, although we seem to be doing that a little at a time here and there. By then Maria will no doubt be making a living as an artist, her plunge having been sooo successful. As far as the collaboration goes, there are too many choices. I do live the idea of doing a book, but unless we did a specific book or haiku poems it wouldn't be much different than a regular ecxhange. I will go with the flow, whatever we decide is OK. Dave, are you sorry you started this? There have been some interesting ideas today. I'm shore that the technical details can be worked out. I have letterpress and some binding skills but as I am doing my MFA I it would not be till 2001 that I would have time to do that sort of work. I have a woodcut in the Fremantle Print Award in Western Australia opening on the 10th of September. John Ryrie ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V8 #682 ***************************
