Case in point - I have a copy of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, 1981 calendar titled "The Art of Utamaro" that has 48 reproductions of his work. So not such a new trend. Not even a copyright disclaimer. There was one on Ceramic Sculptural pieces which I have passed on to a good friend. But, I must confess, that I have now sent over a submission to their request for gallery pieces..and will keep my fingers crossed that all goes well. *** Philip Thank you for your information on the ART$INFO site. It is very comprehensive and I have several friends in my printmaking circles who would be interested in accessing that site, too thank you. I actually work with a Philip Smith *** Josephine At times Perth is isolated, but not because of communication links, only when we think of travelling. Even a plane ticket to Broome in the north of the state costs more than $600A, that is why forums like Baren are so encouraging. Submissions for The Australian Cultural Expo to be held in Sydney next year close on 15th October 1999. So many things on for us next year that it looks as if it could be an exciting year... I will be at the Olympics with my daughter who competed in Barcelona in Artistic Gymnastics.. She is of course retired now and finishing her 5th year of Medicine. I usually head for the Galleries when I travel to the East Coast..it is my best opportunity to soak in some culture! It reflected on his long career and it's theme was on how Picasso modeled and used as source of inspiration his wifes & lovers, his father and above all himself on many of his works. It gave me some ideas for our exchange #4 print (self-portrait). A sad note were his last years as a recluse an a workaholic.....the film eluded to his last wife keeping his children and visitors away while he concentrated on just dishing out the work......the price of fame.... Have not seen any postings from Graham lately......wondering if Marnie has locked him in the studio and thrown away the key........... WoW! Nineteen impressions....200 prints....I don't think I need Maria's help for this one....that's at least 3800 times you had to put the baren to the paper. Right ? Something about this print seems cold and distant....maybe because there are no people in it...or maybe because you....... This print is from the the frontispiece of a book on the anniversary of the death of the poet Kagetsu, as Dave mentioned, and what you see as coldness is supposed to be, I think, emptiness or loss, it's a portrait of the poet no longer there. Jack ------------------------------ From: "Jean Eger" Date: Tue, 5 Oct 1999 04:22:59 +0900 Subject: [Baren 6113] Julio, There is a warehouse in Hunters Point Shipyard in San Francisco, where a fellow keeps hundreds of used cases of lead type. I bought a beautiful old case that had come around the horn for $50, full of type. But most of them are metal cases, standard size--called a California Job Case. So if you are ever in this area, let me know and we can go out there and browse on a weekend. Tell him he has a fan... sigh .. one day I'll meet him Masters degree, hope there's a spell checker on the thesis ;-) I just looked at your prints, I liked, I attached one to an e-mail to the husband so he can see too. He's an IT person so the last thing he wants to do at night is look at a PC screen.. I've been using VAnSon inks all year. They are very good. I only use vegy oil for clean up these days (mine is a turps free studio). VanSon is a rubber based ink which is why it never skins, I find that this makes it a bit harder to clean up but the extra effort is worth it. I have an address for a supplier in Sydney. Jan My husband and I are planning to _run away_ when the Olympics is on, if we can. But if we cant I'm only an hour from the centre of Sydney by Train so we might be able to meet up. I've contacted the Cultural Expo people already - more later. Julio Picasso was a mysogynist and an opportunist. He spent his life bludging (sponging)off his women, and he changed them when they started to wear out, not a nice man, like many 'masters'. Pity we dont have more 'mistresses' really. News I've just joined a new artists co-operative on the Hawkesbury river (between me and Sydney) and the inaugural show is being hung on Saturday at Brooklyn. I havent seen anyone else's work yet but they are mostly painters. I'm going to Canberra next week so will be offline, I guess the mailbox will be overflowing when I get back. What you say of Picasso is probably also true of many other artists (and other famous people) thru the history of Art. Lots of bad apples out there. I could use some tips on the use of ink cleanup via veggy-oil as per the Van-Sons inks. I would rather stay away from the harsh chemicals. Jean: Thanks for the invitation. In thirty-one years I have lived in this country I have never been west of the Mississippi (well, once when my wife was ill and we flew into Rochester, Minn.). After H.S. me and a friend were going to go west and canoe thru the northwest...did not happen. Maybe one of these days.....I have relatives in Vegas which is just next door to California.... Have you used the type you bought in any of your prints ? Still no word from Graham.........uhmmmmm? Couple of interesting new web sites popped up this week: The International Fine Print Dealers Association now has a site, including lists of dealers dealing in ... prints, of course. They are also announcing a print 'show' in New York for early November: International Fine Print Dealers Association 9th Annual Print Fair Park Avenue Armory Park Avenue at 67th Street New York, NY NOVEMBER 4 - 7 Noon - 7 (last day till 6) Daily Admission: $12 88 exhibitors: Old Master to Contemporary info: (212) 759-4469 http://www.printdealers.com/html/home.html - --- Not directly related to woodblock printmaking, but I think of interest to many of our members, is a new site on Suminagashi - The Ancient Art of Japanese Marbling, at: http://www.suminagashi.com/ Their links list should keep you busy for days ... *** Re: Eric Gill's woodcuts, which Julio and others were discussing recently. Abbot & Holder in London have some inexpensive 'restrikes' of his prints for sale. Check the page at: http://www.abbottandholder.co.uk/Aah328e.htm ... for details. There are also some woodcuts by Seaby and Thorpe ... *** Julio wrote, re my newest print: > Something about this print seems cold and distant....maybe because > there are no people in it... The mood I think, as Jack mentioned, is presumably to try and give a feeling of 'the man who is no longer there ...'. Shortly after posting the image on my site, I received an email from a [Baren] member who found it interesting that the silhouette on the scroll looked very much like ... But no, I won't tell you the name that he mentioned! You'll have to decide for yourself ... http://woodblock.com/surimono/1999/1-6/display_print_1-6.html *** Not that it makes any difference to the forum (!), but I'm off now for ten days, so there will be no web site updating (archives, etc.) during that time. Maybe I'll get a chance to 'drop in' on [Baren] while I'm over at Matt's place, and maybe after Friday morning's little get together, we might find a way to put a few photos up on the Message Board ... Talk later ...
