Baren Digest Saturday, 9 October 1999 Volume 09 : Number 735 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Vollmer/Yamaguchi Date: Fri, 8 Oct 1999 10:33:42 -0400 (EDT) Subject: [Baren 6165] Getting Together Congratulations Maria and Ruth, nice page. My connection is extremely slow, but the pages loaded quickly. Nice woodcuts, too! (which is actually the point, right?) Glad Bea is excited about her knee replacement, no stopping her now, with two good knees! And Jean, I was hoping your treatment was finally OVER. Soon, in any case. Good luck, you accomplish so much now, you will be a real powerhouse when you recover your full strength! Judy Mensch and I just put the final touches on the Baren Print Portfolio show. We enlisted Ray Hudson to help up with the signage. I photocopied Dave Bull's informational sheet for posting at the beginning of the show, and Ray helped us hang them under plexi. Ray was in New York City for a lecture at the Museum of the American Indian, and we three were able to meet at Manhattan Graphics for dinner. It was very nice to see his Chinese technique woodcuts. (He studied how to do this technique in China, a 6 week course.) I begin to understand how they are different from Japanese. He uses very thin paper, with very little sizing, so the sumi ink bleeds out in places, like an ink painting. The registration seems much more casual, and he has painted color on the back of some of his prints, which shows through because of the thinness of the paper, looking like a bokashi. He mounts the thin Chinese paper on heavier western print paper. So the show was a nice focus to meet Ray H., and I hope to meet some others at the opening this Saturday. Sorry not to see Dave and Matt (and Lynita), but hope you'll post some photos of your get-together in New Hampshire. I would be interested in the juried show of portraits that you mentioned. Do they have a Web Site or e mail? I never thought of rats as a subject matter....but you really seem to have a gold mine going there.....long live the RATS! Now what can I use that's more........how about worms ? Just kidding , great work......thanks for the info on "Out of the Wood" series, I'll be in touch soon....thanks for putting up my contribution to the mural....one suggestion here....it looks like the mural is really taking off!.....I recognized lot of the artists contributions from visiting their web-sites...but for many I wanted to know more...you can add a small tittle/text to the html code so that when someones pauses the mouse over a mural photo the artist's name & print title displays.....it's of course a little more work for you....but when you start getting into the hundreds of photos....you'll be happy you kept track and the viewers will be able to identify each print.....que crees ? ------------------------------ From: Date: Sat, 9 Oct 1999 06:03:18 -0400 (EDT) Subject: [Baren 6170] NYC Show (From Ray Hudson in Vermont) As April mentioned in a recent post I was able to visit the Manhattan Graphics Center on Friday and see the Baren show. Judy, Sarah and April have done a splendid job and the show looks stunning. It was wonderful to have met some "Bareners" for the first time, to get a tour of the center, and to talk about printmaking. Thanks! Judy, Sarah, and April! for everything! (for plugging and painting the walls, for mounting and hanging the prints, for arranging for the reception, for being the generous and supportive friends you are to all of us!)
