I don't want to sound like I went there as a spy. And where are all the postings about last night's Opening? I thought I'd be off center stage by now. Well, I guess I can answer a few questions. I arrived at 9:00 AM to find Matt planing some birch for me to try. Sadako had just made some paste in the kitchen and Dave was setting up to print. Dave had brought his gorgeous blocks, shark skin softened brushes and tight, tight barens from Japan with him... he used Matt's pigments. I met Matt's artist friend and we were then joined by two art professors and three senior art majors. After introductions Dave spoke a bit , Baren Forum-like discussions followed, and we were treated to seeing and touching the Surimono Album. We then went up to the studio to watch Dave print. Matt chased away a woodpecker who was disturbing the peace--or maybe destroying Matt's structure. (Enough details, Gary?) Dave's methods are basically the same as what I learned in Tokuriki's studio, it's just that Dave does it so well! The non-baren members left around 11:00. Betsy, Matt's wife, came home, we ate, talked, looked at my prints and I left before 2:00 PM. Back to printing . Looking forward to hearing about the Opening. Gary, thanks for asking for more! Probably all the folks who attended the opening last night are still resting up. We did have a short post from Ray Hudson & Judy Mensch on Friday. But, of course we want *all* the details - who was there, what they said, what they thought, etc. etc. etc..... I thought it went quite well. Everyone seemed to be having a good time and talking alot. I wasn't feeling that great-really just tired-so was not in the thick of things. It wasn't a large turn out, but very nice. Ray Esposito, April, Sarah, and James were the artists present and Sarah and April had invited a number of people. I had sent out a partial listing of the Graphic Center members including one man that has an excellent woodblock print collection, but I don't think he turned up. A number of people all went back to April's for pizza and more print talk after the opening. I didn't go, so I'll let April tell you about that. April also took some pictures. The prints all looked wonderful and I think those of you that couldn't make it to the opening would be pleased. Thank you all for showing your work at MGC. It is great for the Center to have some new work on the walls and it was a great opportunity for me to meet and work with some of you. Lynita, You're just starting to get the hang of it. >Matt chased away a woodpecker who was disturbing the peace--or maybe >destroying Matt's structure. (Enough details, Gary?) No, no, not really. You can add that woodpecker to your bird series, I want to see it, in with the grackles and sandpipers. It was probably Matt's assistant. You know Matt, he could _teach_ blockcarving to a woodpecker. Now, you were saying??? Gary ------------------------------ From: "Jean Eger" Date: Mon, 11 Oct 1999 07:29:10 +0900 Subject: [Baren 6187] Gary, I always wonder if the printmaker makes his or her living that way, but it is usually very difficult to get this information from people, unless they actually do make their living that way and are proud of it, so I wouldn't not expect Lynita to drag that information out of Matt in an afternoon. But the rest of your questions are good. Perhaps they should be directed at the individuals directly. Absolutely, Jean, it's just that Lynita was the only one speaking up, presumably the others were enjoying their meeting yet, and of course we wouldn't want to interupt that. When Matt gets back on-line, I hope he addresses some of them. Dave, I expect will be off to Canada soon, and by the time he returns to Japan I will be leaving for the northland for a week or two, so hoped to get the news fresh now. Hope I didn't seem _too_ inquisitive. If so, my apologies. Head over to the Message Board ... (If you've forgotten where that is, just go to the main [Baren] web page, and look for the 'Show& Tell' link.) 'till later, best wishes to everyone (and hoping to hear more about the get-together in the Big Apple) Matt/Dave ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V9 #737 ***************************
