Hi Bea, I have participated in exchange #2,3,and 4, but usually sit back and just enjoy reading and hearing about everyone. But I will be in LA for the winter, starting around the 20th of December, and would love to meet more printmakers in the southern cal area. I have been living in the Portland area for the last 10 years, and have the pleasure of knowing Barbara Mason and Wanda . I am originally from Los Angeles, and hope that I could be included in the get together planned I think for January. Please let me know. I will be living in Huntington Beach area, and will be starved for interaction with other artists in the area. Look forward to hearing from you. Congratulations on your show at the Brand, and the Purchase Award. Will look forward to meeting you in person some time in the future. ------------------------------ From: Dutch Stowe Date: Thu, 02 Dec 1999 09:13:01 -0800 Subject: [Baren 6945] Dragon Postcard Exchange My dragon which has been locked in a woodblock for the last 500 years is also screaming to get out (along with the parrot, chicken, cats and dog make it somewhat noisy around here.) Also someone mentioned something about McClain's going by the wayside. Is this one of those vicious rumors or is there substance to this? I have just started buying from them and if they are going to "fade out" I want to buy more tools which I find to be reasonable priced. Thank You Dutch Stowe ------------------------------ From: Wanda Robertson Date: Thu, 02 Dec 1999 09:34:15 -0800 Subject: [Baren 6946] Re: Baren Digest V9 #802 > Has somebody volounteered to buy Hosho? I thought I saw a non functioning link with > it. Hi Marco, Don't know if anyone answered you on this one or not. But Dave was only toying with the idea, as someone had mentioned a brush-maker in the midwest that would make brushes to order. Dave's idea was that people who were close to these places could take orders from Baren members & we could order as a group and all save $. The page he put up was only a sample of how it would be handled. How is the carving/printing going? Good I hope! We who are in the area are hoping that someone will buy it soon. It would probably be a good idea to stock up. Yes, there are two exchanges going on - the one with University of Oregon. Margaret Prentice is in charge of that one. That message was posted on the "Prints-L" list. Baren's version of that has been taken up by Pete White - and is on a more informal basis. With the prints being sent individually to each other. The page with names & directions is: http://www.geocities.com/Area51/5426/baren.html Hope this helps clear up some of the confusion. Thanks Bobbie, Can I say I "enjoyed" your Sorrow in Exchange #2? I did. Looks like lots of woodblock printmaking folks coming this way - how nice. I'll keep the Baren posted on the up coming gathering of Bareners in LA - should be fun. That was Maria Arango who won the Purchase Award at the Brand Gallery. I'm looking forward to meeting that energetic and talented woman! She voted for the weekend of February 5/6 for an LA meeting and that's fine with me - OK Georga? Ruth? Dutch? Pete? Roxanne? could you come down then Andrea, Jean? Julio - you coming? Graham you and Marnie? what a nice trip - Sarah and April - escape the cold! how about it James? Any one else? - think about it - some rain in LA at that time (if we are lucky), not too cold, some sun and no smog! Giving up the hospital bed today - so I'm on the mend! So do I, but I think its probably going to be 50 b4 I get mine. John, I sent you mail, twice, one each to old and new address and no reply, did you get it? Amanda, if money is a real issue and believe me I do understand, have you considered going to chinatown and buying some caligraphy paper? You know, the stuff that comes in a roll. I also got some, when a student, that came in flat A4 sheets and worked out at about 10c per sheet. Printed very well with oil by hand too. Dragons. I went to mail box to check yesterday, no dragons yet. Spent the day pasting mine on cards made from mine own handmade paper. I had some thicker stuff just waiting for a project like this. Made four pale blue ones for the four boys on the list. Isnt that sexist *grin*. Hope you like them. Am hoping to post them today, with luck. Might even scan one up so you can all see. Have just discovered that the reason I have been getting cut off the net is that windows is doing a 'you are idle I will time you out' thingy. Cant seem to find where to switch this off. Any helpers? I just changes over to netscape 4 too, am still learning how to use it. It doesnt seem to be in preferences. Help please? Graham, have I offended you in some way? I know I sometimes inadvertantly get clumsy and say the wrong thing, but the last thing I want to do is upset or offend anyone. Is a wonderful dragon and I like what you did with the scratch lines. I was thinking that we should create a dedicated dragon's web page for displaying all the prints. I started to put something together on my server.....and I will add the prints as I receive them in the mail. I will also be participating in the "other" dragon exchange due in March as probably will other bareners. As soon as the DRAGON page is functional I will post the URL. Thanks.......Julio ------------------------------ From: Legreenart@cs.com Date: Thu, 2 Dec 1999 20:30:37 EST Subject: [Baren 6955] Re: Baren Digest V9 #805 I think baren is the best thing I've gotten out of getting on the web. I enjot reading every posting even though I do only style western woodblock and other methods of printmaking, and no Japanese style woodblock at all. I would like to invite any interested printmakers who have not already done so to enter Stonemetal Press' juried exhibition, Hand Pulled Prints VIII. The show is held at a high end galley in downtown San Antonio in April. The owners of the gallery work hard to make sales, and local museum curators attend the opening. If you would like to enter, I will email you a Prospectus Le Green , legreenart@cs.com ------------------------------ From: Josephine Severn Date: Fri, 03 Dec 1999 01:12:18 +1100 Subject: [Baren 6957] Dragon Cards Hi everyone There is now a page dedicated to the dragon exchange at http://www.acay.com.au/~severn/dragon.htm I have put up images of my card here and will put up all the cards as they come in. If you dont want yours displayed please let me know. The dragon page sounds wonderful Julio. My dragon is emerging (slowly) from his place between the plys. He sure looks cranky, though. Hope he behaves until I can send him off to the 4 corners of the earth! Do you have any idea why they have put their business up for sale? Is it a matter of lagging demand for woodblock supplies, or something else? Jack ------------------------------ From: B Mason Date: Thu, 02 Dec 1999 21:03:13 -0800 Subject: [Baren 6960] McClain's Jack, Elaine's husband George has just retired and they want to travel. They said if they did not find a buyer they will just close it down after the new year. What a shame. Think someone could increase the business greatly by putting it on the internet. It could be run from anywhere as it is almost all mail order. Hummmmmm. Marnie and I have had experience on the art supply business in Barrie Ontario..... The major observation we had was that people would drive 60 miles to Toronto to save 15 We use to rack our brains over this.... So much so that now we have none left....(<: Another observation, 4or 6 months I have had the materials web page with all sorts of goodies. The prices are better than McClain's with the exchange. Maybe two inquiries. One order. Actually thats not bad....50% I have related to many about the wonderful pigments available ... Not one order I offered a really great deal on the Hosho paper. 6 orders out of the 100 odd people on the Baren.... Dave has related to me that the paper makers in Japan are desperate for orders. Hummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm Does anybody have an answer. Graham ps A little voice in me says......
