I just do it as little as possible. That's one thing I like about hanga, the measurements of prints aren't in inches or centimeters, they are in halves and quarters and thirds of sheets. And since you always have to adjust the relative proportions of water, paste, and color on the block for printing, it really doesn't do you much good to measure! I usually start with a tablespoon of methyl cellulose in the bottom of a plastic quart container (like a yogurt container), and add water, stirring until it seems thick. The powder will continue to absorb water overnight, so it usually becomes thicker than you thought. Adjust to the thickness of heavy cream, or till it just drips off your spoon. Thicker than milk, and thinner than yogurt. The important thing is to add WATER to the Methyl cellulose, not the reverse, which makes big LUMPS. Bea, what does the baking soda do? Juan, I look forward to hearing more about your trip to Japan! And Phil, you've created a monster! the dragon has turned into a huge project, with 30 names! However, the one's I've got so far are pretty great, so I guess I better follow through! Oh yea, is anybody thinking of going to the 28th Annual Southern Graphics Council Conference in Coral Gables, Florida, March 1 - 5, 2000? www.as.miami.edu/art Best to all for the big nothing: 00! Happy dragon year! April Vollmer ------------------------------ From: Wanda Date: Sat, 25 Dec 1999 19:46:08 -0800 Subject: [Baren 7271] James Mundie's new exhibit! Go to the woodblock.com message board & then to the Fleisher Art Memorial page & check out James' new drawings in this exhibit! His quirky humor is coming through bright and clear! Plus his attention to tiny, tiny detail. Congratulations, James, wish I were coming to Philadelphia this January, I'd love to see the exhibit.
