Things still slowed up a bit but better than at the beginning of '99 - the computer is helping sort out a house sale and stopping a third party from acquiring too much of my Parent's estate. Japan, believe it or not, IS more democratic AND fair than the U.K. in these sectors. Anyway, hope all goes well for 2000 - all the best to you (and the "assistants") Dave and Akiko ------------------------------ From: "Jean Eger" Date: Mon, 27 Dec 1999 02:33:11 +0900 Subject: [Baren 7276] Question: What do you use the methylcellulose FOR? Sorry to ask a dumb question. Jean Eger ------------------------------ From: "Bea Gold" Date: Sun, 26 Dec 1999 11:14:47 -0800 Subject: [Baren 7278] Hi Jean, Learned from April to use methyl cellulose in place of rice paste - stays fresh and works very well - I don't know what the baking soda is for, April, in the recipe I got from a paper working page but the thickness has been very good and it has lasted without change. I'm happy. Use it for sizing too, Gaham? So I went to get the new addresses and its actually 31! Pete was closing this 31st December , so there's still time, but hurry. I can figure out NY = New York, but what do some of the other ones mean? HI NV NC CT ? Is there somewhere I can look these up? Scuse my ignorance, Im a long way away. Graham the castle is beaut! I assume its made of blocks and can be reconfigured accordingly? Love old fashioned toys, glad your grandkids appreciated it. So many kids today would turn up their noses cas it wasnt a play station or something with batteries in it. Now you have to get all those figurines of little people to 'man' it. It has cooled down here with rain and overcast though very humid. So the Santa's are safe now. We dont have holly or mistletoe here, so it has been replaced with Australian Christmas bush which blooms red flowers at this time of the year. The bush is full of it around here. This is the only truly genuine Aussie component I can think of, Jan , John? April, I was thinking about going since I have family in Florida (unfortunately not around Coral Gables). Since I am still in the middle of applications for gradschool I am saving my pennies for application fees and "the move." But I am keeping all options open. Anyone else going? Oh and happy holidays and a happy new year to all. I had to work on Christmas but when I went over to my father's for dinner everyone had waited to open gifts! They waited for me! It was very sweet and made my Christmas so wonderful. - -Amanda ------------------------------ From: Wanda Date: Sun, 26 Dec 1999 18:52:05 -0800 Subject: [Baren 7284] Re: Dragons and castles Hi Josephine, HI is Hawaii, NV is Nevada, NC is North Carolina, CT is Connecticut. I'm not sure if there is a place on the net to look these up or not. Maybe with the US Postal Service? I'm glad there are lots of people signing up for the Dragon exchange - that means we get *more* Dragons! :-) I am ready to ship out the first batch tomorrow or the next day. Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend, wherever you are, and whatever the weather, and whatever you celebrate! Now on to the next millenium - yes, I know, it doesn't really start until 2001 - but I'm starting early & will celebrate the whole year. Wanda ------------------------------ From: "John Ryrie" Date: Mon, 27 Dec 1999 15:09:03 +1100 Subject: [Baren 7285] methyl Cellulose Jean, I've used Methyl cellulose in book conservation. It can be used for repairing tears with repair tissue, tipping in plates and diluted it is used as a paper size for old paper that has become brittle with age. It's reversible and archivally sound one of it's advantages over starch paste is that it doesn't attract insects. It was first thingies first and now that Xmas is over it is time to get down to serious work. I will test that sample sheet of Machine made Kozo this coming week a let you know what I think of it in terms of print comparison to the hand made paper. My first impressions is the thickness. I and feels like a parchment paper being so thin that you can read through it. Stay tuned... Hi, I'm Christina and I'm new to the list. You guys sound like a lot of fun and I've enjoyed viewing your work on the website.:) I've been "listening" for a while and I've been interested in the disscusion about the purpose for our art. Although this question won't and shouldn't be solved on our list I think it is important, and I wanted to add a statment. Art historians and critics have been wrestling with this question for centuries. "What is good art and what meaning should it have?" I have to agree with Dave and Graham, that art should bee more than just a social comment but I think they are missing a piece of the anwser. I like the theory that an artist is an individual with a unique vision of the world and that good art is a work that can allow the viewer to step into the mind of the artist and share that vision. It should allow us to see in a new way and expand our understanding of ourselves and the world around us. In addition to this theory, I agree that art that is uplifting is more attractive, however sometimes you need the dark to balance the light. I think that when you try to put a message in your work you lose something tangable, the work looks so cold. One last point, The messages we try to put in our work rarely work as intended, most of the time they require an explaination or are misinterpreted. The viewer will bring their own thoughts and assumptions to the interpretation of the work. ( I know this is a little dated, but I was on the Great Christmas Quest: to visit all relatives in the state before Christmas. I read the messages on Christmas Eve and felt compelled to reply) I'm so pleased to have joined your group and look forward to participating in exchange #5. Thanks for you observations and input..... If this listserver does one thing it certainly stimulates some good sometimes pointed discusions about the philosophy of what we *try* to do..... I'm sure it will be hashed time and time again by us and the newbies. Merry Christmas Graham ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V9 #834 ***************************
