I don't actually make the harpsichords - I've been working with a harpsichord maker, and I just do the ornamentation of the instruments. The originals were done as woodcuts, usually on pearwood, which is what I'm using, and there are several surviving instruments which have them. Often the papers got varnished over, so now the white portions look like a deep amber color. The printed papers got pasted inside the case, on the vertical surfaces surrounding the keywell, and on the short "wall" above the soundboard. There had been a husband & wife team in England who were making beautiful hand-printed papers for harpsichords, but their blocks finally wore out, and they decided to call it quits. Since then, there hasn't really been anyone else making the papers by hand. I had been doing the painted ornaments on the instruments, and the instrument maker ran out of hand-printed papers. My background is in printmaking, so I stepped up to the plate. As for my little problem of the slipped gouge, I think I am going to try making a paste out of pearwood sawdust and shellac, and use it as a filler. I'll let everyone know if it works or not. Thanks for your interest. The work displayed is from my series of immigrants' woodcut portraits (next show opening March 2 at the Rizzoli gallery, San Francisco). Check it out and send them and me feedback. And DO spread the word. A presto e grazie a tutti, Marco Flavio Here's the link: http://www.nextmonet.com/ ------------------------------ From: "Jeanne Norman Chase" Date: Fri, 7 Jan 2000 11:59:04 -0500 Subject: [Baren 7551] Re: Baren Digest V9 #849 Adrian Your prints on the harpsichords sound wonderful!!! It seems that we all would love to see an example. Perhaps if you sent a photo to Dave, he would put it up on the Show and Tell board. Therefore I assume the real thing has the bold woodgrain at the bottom. Therefore it would not be just as Dan wants and rightly so. I truly wish I could work this way. My mind is so linear, I can't break out. But I envy and respect those that can. Awesome work. You did a great job on them. Do you feel the new tools have made a difference in your ability to do your work? Are you working any differently, that is making any finer lines, etc since you got them? I just wondered. Outstanding show, congratulations! I really enjoyed reading about the people, it adds a whole extra dimension to the work. Barbara ------------------------------ From: "Michelle D. It is always a thrill to see a number of prints by the same artist and yours are very moving. You're able to bring out individual personalities so well. I love the contrast between the complex lines in the portraits and the simplicity of the single background color (and the single color in the portaits). Thanks very much! Bravo!
