That sketch, to me, is definitely the "Paradise Lost" I was referring to in my note to you and would even make a good title. There are things I still like about the print, itself. I like the shapes in the smoke in the print. The sketch has rings in the smoke that remind me of the tail of a raccoon and I can't shake that image :-) Both pieces (if looking without comparison offer something special. * * * Bea, I hope you camp at Graham's because Jim and I are planning to also. I am glad to know I created something worthwhile for a change. I will be attending. If there is someone out there who is going and would like to get together, like a roomie, It would be fun. I attended the Tampa Conference a couple of years back and it was very exciting and a real learning experience for me. It is always fun to share the events with someone who is like minded. PS. I do not snore!!!! But I can help, I think. Lise Drost is in charge (?) of the thing and a member of the Florida Printmakers Society. E-mail her at: ldrost@aol.com, tell her I said to contact her and ask her if she knows anyone who would put you up. I'm sure that some of her grad students have got room. P.S. did you enter work for the show? Have you heard anything? I have been there and you have captured the essence beautifully. Are you using a mouse or the tablet to draw? My name is David Mohallatee a quiet/shy member of the group. I currently teach printmaking at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond,KY. I am primarily a lithographer and intaglio printmaker; but am very interested in learning / getting involved with relief printing. I have been exploring the medium more since becomeing a member of Baren and have found the disscussions very helpful. I do have a departmental web page which has alittle more information on it about myself and the department which you are welcome to visit at WWW.art.eku.edu/mohalat/default.htm. I'd also like to send out an announcement of an upcomming two person show which I am involved in at a small gallery in Lexington,Ky. The show opens on Feb.1,2000 and will be up through March 31,2000. The openning reception is Feb. 18th from 5 - 8. The gallery adress is Artist Attic, Victorian Square, 401 Main Street, Lexington, KY. If you happen to be in the area you are most welcome to attend. Once again I'd like to thank you for allowing me to be part of your group and am looking forward to continuing to hear form you. Sincerily, David Mohallatee ------------------------------ From: "Jeanne Norman Chase" Date: Tue, 11 Jan 2000 16:46:20 -0500 Subject: [Baren 7646] Clean, neat borders I have tried and tried to get nice, clean, borders on my woodblock prints, to no avail. I looked over the new portfolio exchange and saw print after print with crisp black borders. They look so nice. Mine are ragged. And if i print several colors the edges are still uneven. When I rub the baren over the edge of the print , I seem to pick up a little extra paint along the edge and sometimes get a double , crooked border. GRRRRR I might , in desperation, make prints with no borders. Make the block bigger that the paper so I do not have to worry about borders. Any hints? Jeanne, the frustrated. ------------------------------ From: Gary Luedtke Date: Tue, 11 Jan 2000 17:01:13 -0500 Subject: [Baren 7647] Re: Baren Digest V10 #855 Hi Ruth, Actually I use a pencil or pen to draw, then scan it into the computer for some color work. Thanks for your comments. Gary....with all due respect....I dont' think this is the proper forum to be discussing such liberal ideas. Words like "pencil, draw, scan, computer & WORK".....just don't belong in a Baren posting when all used in one sentence. Julio ps. You left out the word "fluff".....that would have made it complete. ------------------------------ From: David Bull Date: Wed, 12 Jan 2000 09:50:32 +0900 Subject: [Baren 7652] Competition ... I sweep my hat to the floor in a wide arc, (not a "vector" drawn one mind you) and beg forgiveness. : ) Now, ............. Graham. A word with you, aside............. No "vector drawing" was used in my art, you're way off course there. I'm ashamed for you. An old computer hack like yourself should've spotted the difference right off. If "vector drawing" is what you use in_your_ commercial work, I'd like to see some examples of it so that I can educate myself by making a direct comparison. However I'd appreciate your refraining from misleading folks into thinking those are the methods I use, they are not. If anyone is interested, I would be happy to explain my methods myself, thank you. Your "simple" description turned to woodblock art would run like this: "Woodblock printing is nothing. Don't be fooled by folks selling courses in it. Easy as one two three. You grab a chunk a wood, whittle on it a few minutes, daub some ink on it, toss on a sheet of paper, and Voila! you've got yourself a woodblock print! Easy as rolling off a log. Done it hundreds of times and even sold em! If you don't like em, toss em in the fire, you can do another one before the soups even warmed up for lunch. Don't know what all the fuss is about. Boot camp? Whadaya need a boot camp for? They do this stuff in Japan in preschool." A further observation. You seem to straddle _both_ sides of the line_ you've_ drawn. You hate computer art, but you've made hundreds of them for "commercial destinations" by your own account. Ethics of J-E-L-L-0 here? Just where _do_ you stand? Seems your philosphy dances around like "happy feet". : ) Gary ------------------------------ From: Wanda Date: Tue, 11 Jan 2000 17:25:54 -0800 Subject: [Baren 7654] Re: Greetings from Kentucky Yes, David, we know you from your prints!
