Baren Digest Friday, 14 January 2000 Volume 10 : Number 861 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Gayle Wohlken Date: Fri, 14 Jan 2000 09:18:40 -0500 Subject: [Baren 7705] Re: Baren Digest V10 #860 I'd like to thank everyone for today's Baren Digest (which I guess was yesterday's Baren Forum). Maria and Daryl's endeavor is a wonder! Congratulations for the hard work paid off in this exciting print. Michael, I bookmarked your information so I can go back and study more closely. Wow! That baren is an amazing creation, and one worth trying. The photographs help, too. And Graham, I think a picture is worth a thousand words. Thanks for the demonstration on kento cutting. James, I like your description of the illustrations in the Caxton Bible. Good insights into the artist. Wish I had something wonderful to share back with everyone, I'm just still contemplating the subject for the next exchange. I'm still dense, folks. Forgive me if I still don't understand this correctly. To really imply this saying Ten People, Ten Colors, is one contrast possible, or do we need to imply ten contrasts? Let's just take a hypothetical one. There's a lumberjack and he loves cutting down trees, and there's this guy who runs an arboretum and just love his trees. Would this imply Ten People, Ten Colors. Or would ten different approaches to the tree need to be shown? This is not the subject I will choose, I'm just using it as an example Gayle. ------------------------------ From: "Daniel Dew" Date: Fri, 14 Jan 2000 10:02:05 -0500 Subject: [Baren 7706] Pennyroyal Caxton Bible Hey, for anyone out there who might be interested, this book is available on-line through Barnes & Noble for $32.50!!!!!!!!!!! I attended the Tampa Conference a couple of years back and that was it!!! I bought my press and started printing. It was a great experience. I am looking for a room mate, so if you are going would love to share with you. Do you have all of the literature yet? There is a print exchange going on also. You just have to sign up for it. Let me know as I have not made my reservations as yet. They shuttle you to all of the doings so no problem in transportation. Jeanne N. Get to me off list if you want more info. ------------------------------ From: Shireen Holman Date: Fri, 14 Jan 2000 10:23:39 -0500 Subject: [Baren 7708] Re: different ideas/Barry Moser I saw the Caxton Bible recently at the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. I was very impressed. They also had several other books Barry Moser has done - Moby Dick, The Wizard of Oz, and others. His work is absolutely incredible. Some of it is quite humorous, unlike the Bible. There was one print that went with a text about printmaking - he had a self portrait of his face being squashed as it was being run under a press. I was interested in what you said about a substitute for boxwood. What exactly are the engravings done on? I packed them a dinner, but some of those flights will be long, they may arrive hungry. I really liked Josephine's tree idea, I think it can be interpreted in a lot of ways! I got a couple of good ideas from Mayan and Celtic mythology. I think the idea has a lot of flexability! I don't think they need to be landscapes. I don't think this idea has anyless flexability that "ten people, ten colors". I like it, it's got my vote. (But if it doesn't get picked I still will propablity do a few prints independantly ....good idea!) Where is that darned dignity anyway, I know I should have paid more attention in that anatomy class... We're planning, don't you worry. We have a film clip waiting to be edited and photos and, of course, the web site. Definitely we will be doing something spectacular with it just as soon as immediately! Thanks for all your wonderful ideas, sounds like a recipe for success. Daryl is the one with the contacts in the L.V. art world (I'm the shy one, believe it or not), so we'll put him to work on his academic circles. I will probably approach the media with the edited film clip. We'll keep you all posted. Printmaking alive and well in Las Vegas, Nevada...whodda thunk it! Hey, that's a good angle. On to the next! The flowing images, the sense of wild abandon - the water flowing through the whole image & the grim reaper (or is that the disaproving oil painter?) in the lower right corner ---- a huge (and I really mean that!) masterpiece. My heartiest congratulations for pulling (haw) this off. Your roll-up is fantastic! Can't wait to see the red vinyl one. Dan, I always think this is a good idea, but there are a lot of private people who will not respond, so as long as it is voluntary, lets go for it.
