Chang & Eng Bunker, the famous Chinese twins for which all subsequent conjoined twins have been named. Fascinating life story: nearly executed as a bad omen by the king of Siam, 'rescued' by an American sailor, exhibited themselves in England and America, where they retired and settled down in antebellum North Carolina, adopted the surname "Bunker", married a pair of sisters, and fathered twenty-two children between them. The Civil War near bankrupted them, so they made a brief return to the exhibition halls in order to restore their fortune. One of the brothers was a quarrelsome drunkard in ill health. He finally succumbed to influenza (I think), and his brother is reported to have died of fright before doctors could make the attempt to separate them. The plaster death cast of their bodies at the Mutter Museum here in Philadelphia was what got me thinking about doing a Fountainbleau-inspired image of the duo (their conjoined livers are preserved in a tray underneath the cast!). Un-edited. Day 1 Prints are arriving early. Moved husband out of his home-office to stack prints; husband protested, moved dogs out of dog-house to stack prints. Only lost 2 sets, others partly chewed but hope it passes for deckled edges. Day 2 More prints, moved father out of his appartment to stack boxes of prints. He does not like the tent in the park so I moved out and let him have my room. Husband protested father snores. Moved everyone back and stacked prints in the closet, had to wear same clothes for 6 weeks. Day 3 All prints have arrived. Pondering whether I should do this over the weekend or wait for fair weather; dangit, we _are_ having fair weather. Day 4 Put white gloves on, dust mask, bandana to avoid hairs in prints, pony tail, white shirt. Cat ran off thinking he was going to be re-neutered. Husband twirled his finger near his temple while saying: "booga, booga," must be a primitive ritual of encouragement. Day 4.5 Trashed the gloves, can't pick up a darned thing with them. Grabbed x-acto knife instead to open packages; cat ran off again, haven't seen him--er--it, since. Chucked microwave, bread making machine, spice rack, bread box and bowl of fruit to make room for prints. Stacked prints alphabetically on counter. Forgot alphabet, had to translate from Spanish and re-order. Day 4.90 Collating is fun, I can now name all artists and print titles in reverse alphabetical order. Took a break. Forgot it was wintertime and jumped in the pool for a swim. Hypothermia is not so bad, kind of cozy after a while. Day 5 Football playoffs are on, very difficult to keep prints in order when those darned guys won't CATCH THE !@#$%!! BAAAAALL!!! Put turkey in oven, had nothing to do with the exchange but I had to eat sometime. Day 5.5 Re-packed prints. Changed clothes since now the closet was functional again. Rejoiced that I'm still the fastest tape-gun West of the Mississippi. Forgot it was Sunday and trucked over to the Post Office. Decided to stay the night in the parking lot to save face. Day 6 Mailing begins. Dressed in camouflage and face paint to keep people from giving me dirty looks at the mailing places, carried 20 boxes to Post Office. Surprisingly, no one in line behind me said a word, not even a sigh...great idea having the x-acto knife strapped to my army boot as an intimidation stratagem. Outside the post office encountered nice police officers who promptly took the cuffs off me when I explained I was an artist coordinating a print exchange. Day 6.5 FedEx customer service representative doesn't know where Brazil is, or what a woodcut print is, or an exchange--and she definitely had a prejudice against camouflage face-paint. Back home. Drank a fifth of whiskey to calm down. Wrote e-hic-mail. All lies.
