Exhibition wrapped up last night, and now back at this machine after a few days 'in the dark' ... The show went very well - or perhaps I should say as well as I could expect. Compared to last year's spectacular, it was down considerably, both in attendance and orders, but compared to a 'normal' year, it was up in both. I've got a good group of subscribers lined up for the coming year's work ... *** Going through my Inbox this morning, I was looking forward to catching up on the [Baren] discussions from the past week, but instead of discussions I found ... Well, you know what I found. I guess it's time again to remind everybody that we have _two_ lists here! Guys, please take the 'chit-chat' stuff over to 'After Five'. You think I'm nagging too much? Well, I should let you know that in my mailbox, along with all the chat, there were also _five_ 'unsubscribe' notices from [Baren]. Five people 'gave up' on the forum last week. Now these people were only 'lurkers', so you may be inclined to say 'So what? They weren't contributing anything, so who cares if they go?' You may be right on this; perhaps these people weren't _really_ interested in printmaking. But there go five people who showed an interest in printmaking, but whom we drove away. And because they aren't here today, they won't be reading the news that's coming up in this message - interesting interesting news! - and they won't be getting excited about what they will see there ... Let's get things back in balance please! (For those who don't know about it, info on After Five is on the [Baren] information page at: http://w.com/forum (And while I'm nagging, I must ask again that you please try and remove of the old 'quotes' from the end of your messages. I too am a 'digest' subscriber, and it becomes four times as long, and very difficult to read, with all that extra stuff left in place ...) *** I got a note from member Hideshi Yoshida that he has an exhibition coming up - From Feb 7 to 19th. It's in the Gallery Nike down in the Ginza here in Tokyo. Anybody coming over to see it? *** The 'Show & Tell' message board has been updated while I was away ... *** You know that Maria has been busy with the collation and mailing of the Self-Portrait Exchange (#4), and that it has been mailed out to the participants. I live a long way from Maria and probably won't be receiving my package for a while yet. But Maria is 'Super Maria' and when I came back to my computer I found that she has not only physically collated the packages, but she has also scanned in _every_ one of the prints, and uploaded them to the w.com ftp site (in two sizes). I had the 'empty' pages all ready for them, so here you go! http://w.com Now let's hear some _real_ discussion about printmaking! If you don't think that the level of our work has improved astonishingly between Exchanges #1 and #4 then quite simply you must have your monitor turned off ... Go take a look at this stuff right now! And double thanks to Maria! Dave ------------------------------ From: B Mason Date: Tue, 25 Jan 2000 18:25:40 -0800 Subject: [Baren 7952] exchange #4 Thanks Maria, for your efforts. It sure is fun to see them all so soon. Are we getting good or what? I am impressed with the jump in the quality of the work. Excellent job, everyone in #4. Barbara ------------------------------ From: Wanda Date: Tue, 25 Jan 2000 20:09:36 -0800 Subject: [Baren 7953] Re: Exchange #4 Wow! What a collection! I can't wait until my portfolio arrives so I can look at these prints the way they are meant to be viewed - up close and personal. Wonderful work, you guys & gals! However, I sure would like to see more artist's comments attached to this batch of prints. Oil? Waterbase? Paper? What? Where? Why? We can leave out the "who" I think. So many ingenious ways of showing who we are. And please leave comments for the artist - you have no idea how inspiring/thought-provoking/humbling - those comments can be. I personally think that is one of the reasons we are all getting so darned good at this. The help and support (and yes, constructive criticism) that we get from each other! Welcome back Dave. Congratulations on a successful show. I'm sure you are exhausted. Wanda ------------------------------ From: Maria Arango Date: Tue, 25 Jan 2000 22:20:20 -0800 Subject: [Baren 7954] Baren's other newborn (still in conception) Greetings all, New [Baren] business! If you recall earlier this year, Dave asked everyone to send him suggestions on how we can make this wonderful group even more wonderful and, more importantly, perhaps more well known in the vast expanse of the art world. One idea that was suggested by some crazy woman who is always looking to be busier than she can handle, was to have a newsletter. Well, it figures, Dave loved the idea, so I put together a little sample and now he's calling me "Ms. Editor." So I guess it's a go. "Baren-suji" was born. If you recall from your last Japanese lesson, baren-suji are the circular subtle marks left (intentionally) by an expertly guided baren. [Baren-suji], the Newsletter, will be the mark left by [Baren] members for ever more. Obviously a newsletter is not a one-man (and I mean that in a unisex way) operation, so I need your help. [Baren-suji] will be initially an electronic quarterly, beginning April 1st, 2000. Subscribers will be able to subscribe and read off the Woodblock web site, and a printable version will be available. The intended audience includes [Baren] members, of course, but also other printmakers, galleries, colleges and universities, artists in general, collectors, customers and clients, and really anyone interested in Woodblock Printmaking who happens to visit the Woodblock web site and subscribes. Are you excited? So are we!!! Do you just want to jump in and write something for [Baren-suji]? GOOD! I am putting together guidelines for contributors and there is a sample newsletter for wanna-be contributors to browse. Contact me OFF-LIST and we'll chat. Keep in mind that this is YOUR newsletter to read and to share with the world, so we need a few of you to get involved and make this the best and most useful newsletter ever to cross a printmaker's desktop. Here is what we need in terms of articles and contributions: - - Feature Articles such as: book reviews, woodblock history items, interesting and innovative techniques, tool making or perfecting, stories of interest such as the L.A. get-together, the visit to Matt Brown's place, that prisoner in jail who does woodcuts by carving on the sole of his boots with a paperclip, or??? Make them short and interesting! We will probably use about 3 or more feature articles for every issue and already have a book reviewer for the upcoming issue. - - Members Comments on the newsletter itself, on [Baren], or whatever; this is a "letters to the editor" section. Feel free to send me your comments anytime. Change your website or have a new site? Send me the info. - - Featured Member Column. Here is your chance to get to meet in depth one of your fellow [Baren] members. Do a feature on another member, chat with them, visit them if you can, then tell everyone all about them and their work. Take pictures, digitize them, send me the whole sh-bang. - - Latest Works by [Baren] members will include a tiny thumbnail of your latest precious print. Just send your jpegs or gifs to me with the appropriate info. - - Technicalities is a department for "one-point lessons" type of information. Dave has bids on the first one, but we can use more for the next issue. - - Opportunities for Printmakers will be just that, if you hear of a good juried exhibition, call for entries, works on paper competition, etc., send the information to me. I would also get a volunteer to edit and compile this section. Running a workshop? Teaching classes at a local U.? Keep in mind that the issue will come out April 1st. - - Sales and Trades, a department for selling your overstock Hosho paper, old tools, a rusted out press, pigments, books or whatever! Also send "looking for ???" items. There is also an Exchange and Exhibition news section, a Word from Dave section, and an Editor's Notes section, but mainly I need help with the list above. That about wraps it up! A couple of notes of note to note: Please contact me OFF LIST if you are interested in contributing. Deadline is March 17 for the April 1 issue. Let me know well in advance if you will contribute. Woodblock printmaking and closely related items only. Have a suggestion for another department or additional ideas? E-mail me. I especially need folks to volunteer to compile or take ownership of the above departments for me, sort of associate editors. I cannot do this alone! If you cannot contribute at least send money or chocolate chip cookies. CUT! PRINT! WRITE ABOUT IT! SEND IT TO ME!
