(4x5) i doubt this manic behavior will continue as is. MUST PRINT NOW! MUST PRINT NOW! no, really, i'll be fine. jandi >From: Shireen Holman >Reply-To: baren@ml.xx.or.jp >To: baren@ml.xx.or.jp >Subject: [Baren 8055] Re: print # >Date: Sun, 30 Jan 2000 12:47:31 -0500 > >At 09:36 AM 1/29/00 -0800, Graham wrote: > >>For me if I can do one colour on 30 pieces of paper in 2 or 3 hours, >>depending on the complexity and bokashi, I figure I am going like >>stink...... > >Using oil based inks and an etching press, I can print one colour on 30 >pieces of paper in about 6 hours! In fact, it's kind of funny that you mention it, because calligraphy is something that i'm hoping to incorporate more into my work. I guess I could say that calligraphy was my first step into the art world and sort of the doorway that led me to where i am now. anyhoo...i love it! plus, it conveniently fits into my own agenda. jandi USA : ) ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ From: Graham Scholes Date: Mon, 31 Jan 2000 17:42:38 -0800 Subject: [Baren 8095] A Standard of Quality. Ishita (Dave S) wrote.... Right on the money Dave. You and I must have come from the same school.... I don't see a solution as there is no adjudication so it boils down to a mich mach of work. Mind you it was never started with the idea of a standard and I have hoped that, by helping in the teaching department, that the standard would improve through contributions and osmosis. Am I dreaming? I have only taken part in one.... that is setting time to create a piece in the time frame alloted... Most times there is not enough time and did pull out of 2 Exchange. The first one, Fisher, I happened to have something hanging around. The Rain Dance was a piece I was working on prior to the exchange and the 2 1/2 months it took to finalize the prints fitted the deadline. Last fall I suggest that more time be allotted but nothing happened in that regard... I don't recall any dialogue about my suggestion.... However it was in part for the same reasons you put forward now. Sausage factory comes to mind. What you have said is all very right and can only hope that with the up coming discussion some good ideas come forth...... If you work (some of us are still doing the 9 to 5 thing) and do art in the evenings and on weekends it gets harder. I am definitely a person that responds to pressure, without deadlines, I would never get things done. Woodblock is a different animal, you can't rush it. I am trying and not succeeding. I am having to revamp the way I work. My goal is to have a show in the sprint of 2001 that is all woodblock. If it is all Hanga I will really have met my private goal, if not, at least it will be all woodblock. Lets see, that is 14 months away, how many prints can I do in 14 months? Hummmm. You are all invited, I'll keep you posted. This is pressure, but a different more long drawn out pressure. This is an amazing commitment from a printmaker who had never done a woodblock before finding this site on the internet 10 months ago. I have a whole new appreciation for a part of printmaking I paid little attention to before the Baren. The exchanges will keep me moving and learning, I love them. I love them more when they aren't so close together, every three months is good. If a person participates in every few exchanges, they would have a lot more time to plan and complete an edition. To make this work, though, the specifications for exchanges (paper size and subject), and sign up list need to be set a few exchanges into the future, so that those that wish to have longer to contemplate and work on a future exchange can do so. There you go, no more short deadlines. Jack ------------------------------ From: "Bea Gold" Date: Mon, 31 Jan 2000 21:14:14 -0800 Subject: [Baren 8099] home! charset="iso-8859-1" I can't believe it! My Exchange #4 prints arrived, Maria, you demon - Thank you, Saw the info on the council and think it is great - also saw your input Maria, on a newsletter - I will help if I can - some very nice comments on my #4 print - thank you - I'll be spending the next couple of days trying to catch up, learning how to use my new digital camera that arrived while I was gone and enjoying looking at #4 - you are quite a prolific bunch! Any organization needs structure, and as [Baren] takes this step from private ownership to public management, it is essential that there be a structure in place to guide it along the way. It is also important that the people who will be doing the guiding be responsive to the membership, and I am pleased to report that this is indeed the case. These people are not interested in 'power', they are simply interested in keeping [Baren] alive and healthy. > The fact that the sacred tree exchange has > been so well attended indicates that it is a suitable subject for baren > and casts doubts on the decision to reject it as a baren exchange. There is a misconception here. [Baren] is not trying to control and organize 'life' for its members. [Baren] simply offers a place to discuss woodblock printmaking, and in addition to this, organizes various activities that members are welcome to join. The tree exchange simply didn't fit the current schedule. But the world of woodblock printmaking is very wide indeed, and the internet is even wider still. There is plenty of room for any number of people to be organizing and running any number of activities. I am most pleased to hear that the tree exchange is attracting a lot of attention, and I give it every wish for success. > I did not authorise an unknown committee to make decisions on my behalf. > I dont like the secrecy in all this. Again, I'm sorry that there are negative feelings here. If [Baren] is going in directions that any particular member does not wish to follow, he or she is certainly free to go their own way - we have no monopoly on the concept of a discussion forum for woodblock printmaking. 'Unsubscribe' messages cross my desk every week ... Our 'advocates diavoli' in Austria wrote: > First we were discussing printmaking and that resulted in exchanges, > now we are discussing exchanges that result in printmaking. Right you are, Michael! OK, time for some prints! I felt a bit hesitant to show this to you all, because it could start another round of "Hey, let's do this!", and believe me, we don't need another new project starting up just yet ... But these prints are just so nifty that I think you will enjoy and learn from them. It's a set of 12 prints that were given to me by an amateur printmaker who visited my exhibition last week. Go take a look; I think you will enjoy them! http://w.com/temporary/calendar/index.html Dave ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V10 #885 ****************************
