The brush mixes it all up and then smooths it out. To me this all seems so natural that I'm always amazed that when people watch me do it, they are surprised - "Eh? The whole surface of the block is covered with pigment! That won't work!" Well, work it does ... I can assure you. There's a photo of this brushing taking place on the page at: http://w.com/surimono/process/process_3.html There you can see - the pigment is on top of the carved areas, and it's also smeared all around them too ... Make sure you're not thinking of 'painting' the pigment onto the carved areas, you're just 'brushing' it over the surface. Nothing wrong with that at all - it's a common technique when you only want a small touch of pigment, and you're afraid that if you dab with the tokibo, it will release too much fluid onto the wood. This technique is also used when you're just starting out on a printing run and the block is still quite dry. Swabbing pigment onto a dryish block can cause it to be quickly soaked up into the wood surface in only that swabbed location, and the mark that results will be difficult to brush out. Applying the pigment directly to the brush, and then the brush to the wood can make this easier to control. The opening wasn't attended as well as it could have been dew to the hot weather but there should be a lot of people through the gallery over the next few weeks. Anyway I'll get my photographs developed and write something about it for the magazine. I've just got through the 140 emails that were waiting for me, welcome to the new members. I just found the web site for the Munakata Shiko Museum, most of the info is in Japanese but there are quite a few woodcuts to see. http://www.lantecweb.com/shikokan/index.html John http://www.geocities.com/laddertree ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V10 #895 ****************************
