Remember, that wonderful woodblock newsletter that will come out on April 1st? So far we have had some great members promise some great contributions. To make this a bit easier and encourage _you_, the Baren member reading this right now, to contribute, here is some additional information about this work in progress: - -The "tone" of the newsletter will be very informative, very useful to printmakers and print buffs, and somewhat casual. By this I mean that we mainly want to encourage our readership to love (mostly) woodblock printmaking as much as we do. In Dave's words: "should reflect the words of a bunch of people that love making and seeing prints" - -The "focus" of the newsletter remains, as the focus of the Baren Forum= , woodblock printmaking. This does NOT mean that Western printmaking methods or history or other relief methods are completely out of the running. Just like in the forum, the underlying foundation is woodblock. - -The "content" of the newsletter is whatever you will find interesting and useful, interesting and useful, and interesting and useful :-) Obviously the first issue(s) will be what we editors and initial contributors find interesting and useful, and then others can come in with their contributions and soon Baren-suji will be what everyone finds interesting and useful. Now, here are some suggestions for contributions for which your help will be greatly appreciated: - -Features are always welcomed, whether for this issue or upcoming issues. These should be interesting and useful (I feel like I'm repeating myself ;-) to the membership and to other art lovers that we want to "lure" into loving printmaking. A very interesting idea that has come up is: (Some Feature of) Woodblock Printmaking in __fill in your country here__ Since we are an international group, this promises to be a very informative series. Some other examples that have come up are conservation issues, book reviews, aspects of history of printmaking, printmaker interviews... go wild! - -Members in the Spotlight and Latest Works by Baren Members are two sections that will be empty if you don't send me your latest JPEGS and/or where your work can be seen (web included). Just forward those items to me offlist, even if the shows are well in the future or if your image was finished a couple of months ago. Don't forget to include information on your print (size, method, etc.). - -Sales and Trades is another section that will fill as you clean out your studios. Remember there is no selling on the Baren Forum so here is your opportunity to advertise for items you have for sale, post a message requesting something you need, or ???? - -Opportunities for Printmakers is a section that I will need help assembling. If you hear of a print competition or call for entries, let me know keeping in mind that our first issue will come out April 1st. - -Members' Comments are "letters to the editor" and I expect will fill for the issues after the first one. But if you have something to say that "feels" like a letter to the editor, send it on. Deadline for April 1st issue is March 17th. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! Dimitris has sent in an image of his sacred tree which has been uploaded to the PrintAustralia Onelist site. Its at http://www.onelist.com/files/PrintAustralia/Dimitris/dim.jpg You may have to join the list to see it or read the archived messages. An update. The exchange seems to have settled at 35 members, listed on the PrintAustralia site along with the exchange details. There will be an extra print for the exhibition, making the exchange edition size a minimum of 36. The group is currently discussing framing and display boxes and the images they are doing. Although this exchange is closed, I am still accepting names in the hope of running a second group should there be enough demand. This group will be open to intaglio media as well as relief. I will discuss this further in a few weeks time when things quieten down on the home front. The deadline for the exchange is late August, co-ordinator yet to be decided and announced. On another note i have been having serious mouse problems. I am using this as my excuse for the dragon images not working. Solved the problem, now have to find the time to fix it. Will keep you posted when it is fixed. regards Australoprintmaker Josephine ------------------------------ From: michael schneider Date: Wed, 09 Feb 2000 01:16:34 +0100 Subject: [Baren 8304] sorry - politics=20 To all my fellow printmakers, the recent political developments in austria are a topic that I have to address. I am sorry, the topic is not related directly to printmaking. I do not know how far you are informed about the situation, therefore I will give a short description. In the national election on october the 3rd the extreme right party led by J=F6rg Haider got 27% of the votes. In the following negotiations to form a government, the conservative (also 27%) offered the extremists a coalition now in place. This move has resulted in a strong and justified reaction by 14 nations of the EU, the US and Israel. In the past the extremists have promoted racism, anti-Semitism and fascist ideas and run defamatory campaigns against artists. I do hope that the now protesting nations do keep up their critic stand against the situation in austria. As an austrian artist I do feel the obligation to protest against the acceptance of such a government, while I have to appeal to the international community not to break up ties in the field of art and culture. As such a move would hurt the strongest critics of the government most. As for the relation to printmaking: if art is declared a public enemy, the printmakers are suddenly declared artists. Thank you for your patience, michael ------------------------------ From: "Brad Schwartz" Date: Tue, 08 Feb 2000 16:52:40 -0800 Subject: [Baren 8305] OT: Re: sorry - politics=20 Hello... > the recent political developments in austria are a topic that I have to > address. But in the newsletter we can have a full write up with lots of pictures and stuff and things. And it will go out, not only to members of Baren, but also to non-members who subscribe. This could include a whole bunch of people that never really go surfing the Woodblock site. The newsletter will also be available later in printed format for all our subscribers, collectors, customers, etc. So, Bea Gold, reporting from L.A...back to you!
