Since then however, things have been moving forward, and I received this email from Barbara Mason in Portland the other day: > The Vivian and Gordon Gilkey Center of the Portland Art=20 > Museum will archive the [Baren] exchanges.=20 So this is where the Swap prints, and a copy of each exchange folio will be living from now on ... Barbara is donating her own copies of the previous exchanges to the new Archive. Sacrifice above and beyond the call of duty! Not sure if I can make a general rule Jack; the kimedashi I've done so far has all been quite shallow, and the paper has been in just the same condition as for any printing. =20 But I would think that if you were trying to make a very deep embossment on the paper, being very soft and damp would be an aid to help the paper stretch into place ... What do you think? If we're talking about a good paper like a 'hosho', then it wouldn't really be problem. Once the paper is moistened normally, it expands about as much as it _can_ expand. Adding more water doesn't make it expand more, it just makes things soggier. I can't speak for other papers so much ... I know that cheap torinoko papers have quite variable expansion rates, I guess because of shorter fibre length. =20 Another way of looking at this is by making such adjustments in the block. For example, when we do a 'sho men zuri' (front printing), it has to be done with the paper dry, so of course a 'normally' carved block wouldn't register properly. This is calculated from the beginning, and a block the appropriate size is prepared. Perhaps the same thing could be done with the project you have in mind? What size of print. If you were to use Shina plywood for the every colour and emboss your=20 problem of expansion is solved. I suggest you dampen the paper just enough so as expansion has=20 occurred but not so damp that it looses its snap..... don't get to=20 soft and mushy..... if you know what I mean. This is important so that when you emboss you are infact stretching=20 and pulling the fibers apart. Then when it dries the embossing=20 survives the drying process.
