I have heard that speedball ink is not light fast and will fade over time. Have you noticed this in any of your work? I know it does not have as much pigment in it as other ink, but I have not noticed it fading outrageously. I have used it a lot with kids in the schools and after several years my samples are still ok. You might want to eventually try the Akua Kolor ink, just in case and also for the large variety of colors. Barbara "Daniel L. Julio - You can add "setswell" (about 5-10%) to most litho inks to get a good tack for relief printing. Also, the rubber based inks are great for letter press printing. Breathtaking, beautiful, awesome, incredibly open and free and aaaaaaahhhhhhhh Keep on keepin' on! Do > the different hardnesses come with different names? Well... basswood and poplar are not the same thing, either biologically or in working properties. Basswood is easier to carve, poplar is stringy and "woolly". Of the pines, western white pine and yellow pine are the softest, ponderosa is harder, and American pitch pine harder still. Keep in mind that, depending on where you buy lumber, you will not always find them to be accurately labeled as to species and origin. Also, "softness", or workability can vary a great deal with growing conditions, so all this information is somewhat useless. Find a wood you like under the knife, and hope that your supplier is consistent. Jack Aiea, Hawaii ------------------------------ From: "Daniel L. I want to also participate but until I get this %$^^^^&^%$#(( number 5 print done and on its way I really cannot concentrate on anything. I think this print has been a good one, but also a challenge to all. I will be eagerly waiting for the results. I know at least 5 who are still struggling with this exchange. Never fear Maria , we will all come through. Mine is done, all but cutting the glasseine and numbering and signing and sending. Hopefully if no one bothers me tomorrow it will be in the mail by Monday or Tues at the latest. Poplar is .42 sp.gvty .... very small degrees..... it will depend at what elevation the pine and poplar grow. There are many degrees and kinds of woods. There is a western, eastern, white, and red pine.... so the need to know the exact facts for each wood is of little value. The value comes by experimentation with each and find the one you prefer and works for you. It is amazing how much I was able to do in such a short time. I am going to work on it every day until the intermediate class in April. These classes are designed for business people who only have a day or two to go to class, so they are pretty intense. That's why I was heading for the bar...and am still heading that way. Talk about needing to unwind! I liked Barry Moser's Bible, Wanda sold me her copy as she did not like it. She found it very dark, but it is a serious subject and I expect the engravings were quite a bit larger than the insets in the printed copy. I found them amazing. I would love to see the originals. Does anyone know where they are? Will they travel? Will they be on permanent exhibit somewhere? Barbara ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V10 #940 ****************************
