That's most interesting. I kind of like it, though. That insistence of the wood having its way humbles me. I'm always surprised when I pull a print. If you saw how stilted some of the original drawings are, I'm sure you'd be surprised too at how they change under the knife with the poplar having its final say. Anyway, thanks for all the info on wood, Graham and Jack. I did not know that about pine actually having hardness. Maria, I like your new prints from the desert hike, the red cliffs one, especially. What wood did you use? I can't remember if you mentioned it on your site. Happy belated birthday, Julio. Barbara, I read Baren After Five before I read Baren today so my post about "what program" you are learning will make no sense. Now I see it is Photoshop. Pass along any tips on Baren After Five you are willing to share! I have Photoshop, but probably don't use it to its fullest. Graham, don't flinch. :-) This is a great help in working out problems and saves time for some of the better parts of the woodcut process. It's at the library - you need to call ahead and ask to make an appointment to see it. Anyone can see it, and quite a few of Barry Moser's other works as well. I have all these pieces that came with my bundle o' wood that are too thin for bigger prints (3" wide x assorted lengths), but working on this elongated format yields some interesting slices of images. They fit in a backpack just perfectly too, except they crush your banana if you're not careful :-) Paper is Murillo chestnut and ink a mixture of black, umber and purple. I have to remember to put all the nitty gritty details with the enlargements on the website, I keep forgetting. In the Swap shop do you have to have an edition or can you send strays (prints that were perhaps one out of one, or four out of five , or whatever???? I intend to participate but this exchange 5, like many others has been on my mind, my boards, my tables, my dreams, my round file, etc. Plus I have not evern thought about the Tree exchange, aaarrrrgggghhh. as Charlie Brown would say. I guess CA and FLA have some things beside warm weather in common. Oh, if you're wondering what I'm doing in the USA - we're not going to Italy until May. My friend got a call telling her that the weather was too cold and wet and she should wait a while. She can't go in April - so May it is. I'm glad, (except for having given up the print exchange) because it will be warmer. BUT, we are going to Las Vegas to play with Maria and family and to help get Exchange #5 out. So, everyone hurry and get your prints to Maria! Me too. The Gunk Foundation to Award Grants for Public Art Projects Deadlines: April 30, October31 The Gunk Foundation's (http:// www.gunk.org/) Grants for Public Art Projects are intended to challenge the current market-dominated system of art production and to move art out of the market and into the "public realm." Given the lack of funding for art and artists in the United States, art production is often geared toward what sells and not what provokes thought. The Gunk Foundation is interested in supporting projects that take art out of the museum, gallery, and alternative spaces and into the spaces of daily life. The amount and quantity of the grants will depend on the quality and quantity of applicants. Contact: The Gunk Foundation P.O. As you know from recent postings by Maria, the new 'Baren-Suji' newsletter is nearly ready for publication. When it is ready, the newsletter will not simply be sent out as a text message to [Baren], so you will not 'automatically' see it here on the forum. If you head over to the w.com portal page: http://w.com ... you will see a new section of the website for the newsletter, including a subscription page. Please visit that page and enter your subscription for the version of the newsletter that you wish to receive - the HTML version with included illustrations, or the plain text version. Do this before April 1st (publication date of the first issue) to make sure you don't miss out on receiving it! I have seen test samples from Maria, and can promise that you won't be disappointed.
