Unfortunately, I won't be able to make it to any of the other islands this trip. I enjoy the chatter on this site, and am working on my print for #6. The gallery plans are firming up .. I appreciate all the suggestions I received. Now we just have to find the time and $$ to make it happen! Still looking for a small press ... any suggestions? I want to do some deeply embossed prints. Hi, Patsy--hope you enjoy your trip to the "big island"! On the Hilo side, you might try to get up to the Volcano Arts Center--I don't know specifically that they will have prints on view, but there are a few printmakers on that side. I'd suggest the University of Hawai`i at Hilo's campus center (they had an exhibition of prints from the Pacific Rim area earlier) but I think they've pretty much closed for the summer. Wayne Miyamoto is a printmaker (intaglio) and head of the art department there. On the Kona side, you might try to get up to Holualoa where Hiroi Morinoue runs a little gallery. He and a couple of other artists including Nora Yamanoha and Hans Ladislaus are doing some interesting prints--sort of combinations of contemporary Japanese techniques and monoprinting. If you get there and meet any of them, please say hi from Marcia Morse ------------------------------ From: "pwalls1234" Date: Sun, 7 May 2000 21:10:00 -0500 Subject: [Baren 9620] Re: Corel Draw vs. Photoshop/Illustrator Dwight, Houma eh?? I have been down that way a couple times. I moved to Baton Rouge from New York a couple years ago and yes what a drought!! I think we were 12-14" below average fro the last month alone. Anyways, TrueType Fonts are Printer Fonts but conflicts can occur. The Fonts can become corrupt, especially on PC's. You can try to reinstall them. Or another problem can be that you are setting some arbitrary font size (99, 112, 3, etc. . . ) Does the same jagged edge happen when you print 10, 12, 24, 36, or 72 point type?? Let me know how it goes. pete walls baton rouge http://www.firsttree.com ------------------------------ From: "Michelle D. About the wood Jan mentioned--Jelutong--once in Alaska I ordered some wide basswood but all the company could send was jelutong. I found it cut like butter but had so much oil in it I could only print with oil inks. Unfortunately, it also only came in two inch slabs. I've just returned from teaching woodblock printing to four great students at an Elder Hostel at Horizons near Northampton, Mass. I've done this 3 years in a row and had 2 students return for the third year and two beginers. But after a minimum of initial instruction they got to work and we solved any problems that came up individually. As before, once the carving was done the real work began as they put paper to wood. Best to all, Ray ------------------------------ From: Cucamongie@aol.com Date: Mon, 8 May 2000 08:46:11 EDT Subject: [Baren 9624] Lynd Ward Hi folks! Recently I had the good fortune to track down the woodcut novel "Wild Pilgrimage" by Lynd Ward through abebooks.com. What an incredible series of woodcuts? Are any of you out there familiar with this book? I was curious as to how big the blocks were, I'm assuming they were oil-based & printed w/a press. Very intense and dramatic, and very intricate shading on things. If anyone has any info on how these prints were made, I'd be interested to hear about it.
