I have stayed many a night at the Youth Hostel in NYC.  Its fine and only $25 
a night but its on 103rd on the edge of Harlem.  I had no problem getting 
around with the subway so close.  But if he wants privacy I doubt he would 
want to stay there.  But you cant beat $25!!!!
