[Baren} the mailing list / discussion forum for woodblock printmaking Baren Digest Monday, 29 May 2000 Volume 11 : Number 1024 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Horacio" Date: Sun, 28 May 2000 22:56:57 -0300 Subject: [Baren 9802] Hi Baren My point of view on this discussion about living of printmaking: [1] I think I am the older (amateur) printmaker on BAREN forum. Maybe not in age but certainly in the printing activity. If you don't believe, please, see three of my early 1966's prints on: www.analisevital.com.br/xilogravura1966.htm Many of you weren't born yet... They are big prints (about 50cm x 50 cm), printed with oil paint brushed on some kind of plywood. [2] Despite being the elder (self learn) printmaker in Baren, I never sold any print, except two or three acquisition prizes I got on official exhibitions. [3] Even not selling or exhibiting my prints, I've been living of my prints, I stay alive because of my prints, my writings, my readings, etc..., in other words, my non professional (8am to 9pm) activities. [4] I admire and envy both Dave's and Maria's (my idols) works and approaches to the market: but what I want to say is: printmaking, or other artistic activity (not necessarily doing but also admiring art), can be essential to survive, even when you don't make any $1. I hope you understand my point and my English. You've certainly got me beat! Anybody else here on [Baren] from the dark ages? :-) > I never sold any print, except two or three acquisition > prizes I got on official exhibitions. May we ask 'why' Horacio? Your prints are individual, interesting, attractive, and technically very well done. I am sure that you would find a positive response if you chose to make them available. Do you have a philosophical stance against selling your work? > ... printmaking, or other artistic activity (not necessarily doing > but also admiring art), can be essential to survive, even when > you don't make any $1. I'm sure that we have 180+ people here on [Baren] who agree with you! > I hope you understand my point and my English. We have no problems understanding you at all Horacio, but I for one, regret that your postings are always so concise - I'd like to hear more about your work ... (and I suspect I'm not alone ...)
