A wonderful way to get a lot of work done in a short time. I hope your students are taking waterbase woodcut! That is $22 US well spent Barbara...I must go down to our State Library and refresh my memory. The Eric Gill book used to be in our Claremont School of Art Library..I remember it well. Hiroshi Tomihari, Contemporary woodblock printer from Oyama, Japan and my mentor, will be here in Perth from June 20th with an Exhibition of some of his students' works. I am really looking forward to having him back here for some more No 1 instructions and for him to check out my cutting and printing. Our own WA Printmakers Association Exhibition opened here last night with hundreds of people attending...great to see in "good old Perth". No, I didn't win any of the prizes (mine the only woodblock), but I did calligraph the certificates!!! Gosia who has just joined PrintAustralia won with her multicoloured woodblock (about 3 feet x 2 feet), but the most intriging of all the prints was in the Experimental Printmaking section of a tractor tyre print printed with "cow shit"....we were all very grateful that it didn't win the aquisition prize!!!! Do I win a turkey or something? :-) Maria, I hope you are going to tell us all about your wood insertion thingy. The good the bad & the ugly. Thinking about doing a print with my sheep. Making them run through a pan of ink & over a piece of paper. Now, if I make multiples of this - would it be a monotype or a monoprint? Joking, joking, joking ---thanks Jan, for an overview of the Perth happenings. It lets you see the compressed image side by side with the original so you can see how much quality you lose with various compressions. Tells you the resulting file size [ each kilobyte takes ones second to load with a 56 K modem, longer with a slower modem. ] Also lets you make thumbnails and image maps. Saw in a computer book that a giant jpg file is called a JPIG. Ebay has a book called Color Woodblock Printmaking, the traditional method for sale. I will update if I come up with an astounding and effective method. Now I have a request and it may sound cranky but here it goes anyway. Ebay is a highly competitive environment and frankly I am with Jim on the policy of "don't tell, don't tell." I understand that we want to share our printmaking findings with our friends and neighbors of Baren, but is it beneficial to anyone bidding to jack up the price of items by alerting 200 additional folks? I say if you are an ebayer, absolutely wonderful and keep it to yourself. I, for one, tend to back off when I see a Baren-friendly name bidding on something that I have been watching, even if I want the item. Call me nice or call me stupid, just don't call out the printmaking opportunities on this list. I do encourage everyone to keep an eye out for good books and printmaking equipment (a 12" x 24" litho stone just went a couple of weeks ago for $50!). Also, on some of these books, check out the Out of Print sections of Amazon and other booksellers to make sure you are indeed getting a bargain. Obviously if people have differing opinions I will back off and eat my words, every one of them! :-) Thanks and health to all, Maria <><><><><><><><><><><><> Maria Arango, Printmaker Las Vegas Nevada USA http://www.printmakingstudio.com maria@mariarango.com mariten@lvcm.com <><><><><><><><><><><><> ------------------------------ From: Artsmadis@aol.com Date: Sat, 10 Jun 2000 12:57:50 EDT Subject: [Baren 10015] Re: ebay & inserting wood In a message dated 6/10/00 11:52:44 AM Central Daylight Time, maria@mariarango.com writes: << the price of items by alerting 200 additional folks? Philip and Darell, your suggestions (respectively: a single complex print partitioned and a brochure inserted in each copy) will be considered, mainly because the time is very short to make 14 prints. Barbara Mason, the official language in Brazil is Portuguese, since Pedro Alvares Cabral's naval fleet arrived at Brazilian coast exactly 500 years ago. The native language is disappearing together with the millions of natives that lived here by 1500... Jandy and Philip, I don't believe it will be edited in English, but who knows? Dreaming is free: it will be a success, will be translated to many languages, will be filmed by Spielberg and win the Oscar Academy award , Nobel prize etc =:^)# The book is - of course - a little autobiographical and has a lot of suspense, humor, sex, musical references, crimes and social / political critiques. The narrative takes place in Rio (most part), Lisbon, Madrid and London, at end of the 1980's and the beginning of 1990's. A very small part occurs in 1911 in the Schiele's studio in Austria. One of the Egon Schiele's drawings, entitled "Self portrait drawing a nude model in front of a mirror" (Albertina Museum / Vienna), is very important to the story plot. By the way, I am an absolute fan of Egon Schiele. Just returned from the Big Apple (why they call that I do not know). Had a wonderful time. Highlight was meeting our good friend and animal lover Sarah Hauser. Also while in the Soho or Chelsea district I saw one of her huge woodblock prints in the Womens National. A hanga print of a dog. Really neat. Yours truely took her first ride on a subway. It was a very surreal experience. Had to take it to go to the Boston Museum where they had a wonderful Maxfield Parrish exhibit. Also featured was a marvelous Asian art exhibition, the gamut from sculpture, ceramics and woodblock prints. Then went to PS1, an old school that has been transformed into a cutting edge museum. Naturally went to the Met and the MOMA. The Met had a a wonderful exhibit, "Masterpieces of Japanese Art from the Mary Griggs Burke Collection. Now I am home in hot Sarasota and getting excited about printing again. Congratulations to Horacio and Pete. Pete you are now a pro and Horacio I can hardly wait to see the illustrated book. Surely you are going to let us take a peek when it is finished. I have my order in already. Josephine My Tree print is ready and will be sent next week. Today was signing day I will be anxious to see all of the wonderful ideas the exchange people come up with. Graham Just loved the Thermodynamics of Hell. Had to print that one out for posterity and to read it , while I ponder the message. Envy you and your "tribe" in Vancouver. You are all probably having a great time and learning so much. How is Gayle doing in her tent???? So many posts and not enough time to answer all of them. While in NY I finally found James Michners Floating World. Also bought a beautiful book called Yoshitoshi's Women, the Woodblock print series by Fuzoku Sanjuniso. Dave, are the women in Japan really that beautiful?? They are gorgeous. Also a book on the Art of Edo Japan by Christine Cuth. I am sure there are lots more posts that I could reply to but feel this is overlong,.So will bore you some more later. Oh, yes Phillip would love to write a tome on what inspires me in my art but afraid that is another post. Love the subject, have to think more on it. Would love to hear about everyones inspiration. Maria, What a sad tale of the desert, but having lived in the desert for a short while I understand its mysteries and beauty. My Baren is callling me. I know how hard it is to get money from schools so great job! I've had to keep away from the internet and email for a bit just to finish up some pieces for a show and now I am reading away only to hear the very sad news about Leonard Baskin. I will treasure the time my work was displayed across from his even more. - -Amanda ------------------------------ From: Wanda Date: Sat, 10 Jun 2000 22:26:17 -0700 Subject: [Baren 10023] Re: ebay & inserting wood Darrell & Maria, don't be so hard on yourself - we all enjoy pointing out interesting things on e-bay. I, myself, have backed off of bidding on some things because I recognized the "handle" of a fellow barener. I *think* I was being nice - someone else may think it's stupid. But, I think if someone wants something bad enough to bid on it - then go for it! Those of you looking for books - don't forget to check the independent book sellers who list their wares with Bibliofind: http://www.bibliofind.com/ I maintain a want list of books that I would like to buy & then just buy one once in a while. You can find very low priced books & very rare (read high priced) books there. And the dealers have always been friendly and helpful. I've gotten some wonderful *using/working* books at reasonable prices. I like to have them in the studio - so I don't necessarily want the first edition/rare copies, but one that has been loved & used. IMHO Amazon is kind of high-priced on their used books. Plus, I suspect they find them on Bibliofind! :-) Happy hunting! and Good Luck!
