That would be a great exchange and show. There's not enough humour in the art world. It really is the unappreciated force - easier to be shocking or revolting or provocative. Keep them around 250 pixels square or soish, optimize them if you can, otherwise I will do it. Also if you have enlargements, send them along (up to 500 pix) and I can upload them and link to them. A new exchange sounds wonderful. My suggestion is Nursery Rhymes. Before you think what you're thinking, this came to mind from a discussion not long ago about the origins of various nursery rhymes - Ring Around the Rosie = the black plague, Mary Had a Little Lamb = unwed mothers/illegitimate children, Humpty Dumpty = Hadrian's Wall, etc. It could make a real interesting portfolio! Message posted by: Mike Lyon Hi, everybody! My name is Mike Lyon. I 'joined' a month or more ago, but as Dave says, I've been a 'lurker'. I've enjoyed following the dialog here very much, so today (to assuage my growing guilt at eaves dropping), I'm jumping in! I'm 49, live in Kansas City, married (19 years the first time, and 7 1/2 HAPPY years and counting in my second), five kids between us, all teens 19, 17, 17, 15, & 15 years old, dog, cat, & cockatiel. I wanted to make art for as long as I can remember. Graduated in Architecture and Fine Art (sculpture major, really) from the University of Pennsylvania in '73, and in Painting from the Kansas City Art Institute in '75. Was a bizwini (kinda like a yogi, but in business, and no fancy turban) from 1976 - 1991 when I sold my businesses and returned to making art and stuff full time (thank God)! Three years ago, bought my WONDERFUL building, where I teach and practice karate, have my beautiful studio and wood shop, & space for a gallery (in a year or two). I spend most of my time (when I'm not with wife, kids, and karate) printing and making furniture. I make monotypes, lithos, woodcuts, mostly. Have a nice little 27" x 60" convertable press (converts from intaglio to litho in about 5 minutes) with electric drive. Studied Japanese wood block technique with Hiroki Morinue for about five weeks three years ago, and have enjoyed those new tools and techniques non-stop! I rarely sell a thing, and spend NO time trying. Mostly just make it and pile it up. The karate side of my web site is pretty mature, but the art side is still in infancy -- you can check it out at: http://www.mlyon.com As for Exchange #7, I'd vote for animal or humorous -- both sound fun! Any chance I can get into the exchange? And how? Barbara I really do not know why you would not want to do Elvis! Look at all the different periods he went through and all the colorful costumes. Now I cannot use up my velvet. I think "Funny" would be great. As someone, I think Phillip, said, we are so serious, lets lighten up. I can think of a dozen topics for funny! In fact, since someone suggested it, many of you have jumped on the FUNNY bandwagon. Ok , Dave, wave your magic wand now and let us know our future. I think he is still recovering from Grahams workshop. Jeanne N Bea So sorry to hear that you are not in tip top condition, but at least you have solved the printing problem. I usually do mine sitting down anyway, Hope this finds you feeling much better. ------------------------------ From: "Maria Arango" Date: Wed, 28 Jun 2000 14:40:02 -0700 Subject: [Baren 10225] compiling themes Okay gang, looks like "Funny" is ahead, I find that a little humorous myself Elvis has received the most mentions, but everyone knows he's nothing but a hound dog "Where I live" is homing right in on the top spot, "Animals" are everywhere! oh my! and "Weeds and Plants" seem to be popping up just outside, while a host of others are lurking nearby Keep voting, deadline is approaching... Some interesting exchange themes here. There was a lot of discussion about the letterforms theme some time ago. I cant remember who first suggested it but I got the impression that the final decision was to re-visit the idea (if not go with it?) when the next themed exchange came up. Image/text relationships are always productive of some great angles. Having said that, I also thought the 'where you live' theme an excellent idea. Unfortunately I will not be able to participate in this exchange so my opinion is probably superfluous. How long before a decision has to be made? There is an art materials swap list on e-groups already. Swap or sell. I can't find the name at the moment, but you can do a search on http://www.egroups.com or i could ask on the papermaking list for you as that is where I remember first hearing about it. These things are fairly useless to those of us separated by distance, but those of you on the spot, as it were, might find it useful. I also vaguely remember a discussion about the safety and archival qualities of that simply green stuff or whatever its called. I think it was on the Prints-L list though? The final impression I got was that it shouldnt be used at all for various reasons, mostly to do with toxicity I think. CAn anyone else set me straight on this? We dont have it here so I wasnt paying too much attention. I recommend vegie oil or baby oil, followed by soap and water or window cleaner to degrease afterwards. The silk cut lino we get here is hessian backed, so if it is submerged in water (as I found out to my dismay) it curls. Then you have to place it in the paper press for a few days to re-flatten it. So I have been known to degrease with meths to avoid this problem. I'm wondering what the other Aussies do about this? One other point. It cuts like butter if its slightly warmed first, but if you try to warm it in the microwave - well - lets just say its not a good idea *chuckle* Josephine Sydney, Australia http://www.acay.com.au/~severn ------------------------------ From: slinder@mediaone.net Date: Wed, 28 Jun 2000 17:36:02 -0500 Subject: [Baren 10227] Re: Green stuff.. It is a green watery product that comes in a pump-spray bottle, and also comes in a large refill bottle. We use it in the print room to clean up the inking stations. It's a slick cleaner, and it isn't at all as dangerous to use as the mineral spirits that we had available in earlier years. Here is the previous Baren exchange on Simple Green: Barbara M. said, "OK all you oil based printers, here is something I learned from Nik Semenoff to make your studios safer. Mix your oil based inks with 1/2 Windsor Newton Artesian paint (water soluble oil paint) of the same color. It works well and then clean up with mean green, simple green's extra strength stuff. This process makes oil based ink water soluble when wet, so no more solvents. This works with etching and litho ink. As I read my notes will add to this info. Brian L. said "My understanding is that Simple Green (and even more so Mean Green if it is more concentrated) is not the best thing to rub into your rubber rollers. Might use a little caution in that area." Jaime said " Another less toxic method I have heard about for clean-up of oil based inks is to 1. scrape up as much ink as possible with a razor blade. 2. Then wipe up the minimal ink with baby oil. 3. then use simple green." Barbara answered "Yes, you are right Brian, they did mention you should clean the rollers with soap and water, glad you caught this. I just learned so much that it is all running around in circles in my brain!" Agatha added "i have to mention to you all that simple green is not as non-toxic as its reputation may have it. we use dawn dishwashing liquid thinned with water in a spray bottle at my school's studio, it doesn't smell as harsh as simple green and works great. we used simple green before that, and the air quality testing in the studio after we switched was significantly better." I want to co-ordinate with Jeanne. Or maybe we could try the two exchange idea??????????? 30 prints come to me, 30 prints go to Jeanne. Jeanne collates hers and sends them to my group and I do the reverse. Now that would be a hoot! I hesitate to "toot my own horn" too much but this is for a good cause. One of my prints (called "3 Squirrel Monkeys") is on sale (starting bid at a very low price) in an online auction (which is being done through ebay) which benefits a group called the Primate Conservation and Welfare Society. The group does a lot of wonderful work to help the many endangered species of primates, etc. At any rate, my woodblock print is among a bunch of lovely items which you will find if you go to http://www.primates-online.com/auction.html then you can click on the various items, which will take you through a link to the ebay auction pages. ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V11 #1060 *****************************
