I have looked all over the main site, one point lessons, etc... but didn't find any mention of anyone "rolling" on the ink with damp paper printing. Is this just a big NO NO? Can it be done? Any hints on problems? I am all excited about trying to print on damp paper, even in only black (per Dave's suggestion), I'm just not that confident about this brushing on the ink business. Any tips? Your examples of wiping materials reassures me you diagnosed your problem. However, now I want to try this experiment. How wide were the lines you had trouble with? Could you compare them to the sizes of graphic art pens as a reference? I print alot by wipng a plate for intaglio, then rolling it up for relief, getting two colors in one printing pass. Dave ------------------------------ From: B Mason Date: Fri, 31 Mar 2000 22:23:55 -0800 Subject: [Baren 9089] wide lines Le, The first plate, I cut the lines with a tiny v gouge, making them as narrow and deep as I thought I would need. They printed erratically and after the second or third try it was obvious the wood had swollen slightly and they were holding little ink. So I made the first mistake, I widened the lines with a larger v gouge. Then I was thinking, how do you aquatint wood! First lines were about a one, second lines were about a five. Second try, seconc plate. I cut the lines a little deeper and tried to be very careful..About a size 3. Still not a great print. The deadline is looming. How can I get this printed so Greg doesn't kill me? Finally I decide I have no more time to experiment and I use the second plate as a relief plate, cutting around my image and using white lines instead of black lines. First day of printing I am fussing with the plate and the tool slips. Plate is history! Back to the first plate, which I cut as a relief plate and finally print. I have a headache. The good news is I heard from Philip that he has successfully printed an intaglio wood plate using untempered masonite. Is this close enough to wood? Think I will try it in the future sometime. I have done a wipe and roll many times on metal plates and do a lot of viscosity printing. I am going to try to figure viscosity printing out with water based inks. I got some from Green drop that may work. I will post if I am successful.
